Doyel: Majerus reprimanded following Charlotte game

From Gregg Doyel’s blog:

St. Louis (sic) coach Rick Majerus, who already has raised eyebrows this season by stating a pro-choice stance that conflicts with the Catholic leadership of his university, was quietly reprimanded this week after coming unhinged Saturday during an 81-64 loss at Charlotte.

According to people at the game, Majerus lost control of his emotions after a shot-clock issue went against his Billikens. Majerus approached the scorer’s table, found the offending official and unleashed verbal obscenities. One source said Majerus made an obscene gesture as well.

Officials at Charlotte and the A-10 confirm that Majerus was rebuked by the league and has apologized to Charlotte.

FWIW, Doyel is wrong in that first paragraph. The conflict was with the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Louis, not with the leadership of Saint Louis University. Oh, and one other thing Gregg – it’s Saint Louis, dammit!!!

Anyway, who was close enough to the scorer’s table to have witnessed this? I don’t remember anything written about it by Jim in the Big O or Timmerman in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Thats because Jim sits on the otherside of the floor. I don’t remember any specifics, but I do recall him getting obscene a couple of times during the game especially after Charlie Coley’s alley-oop, when he extended his middle finger towards the fans. My favorite thing is during his press conference he sat down on the podium instead of walking up three steps and standing at the lecturn.

I thought Jim had said something, but I don’t see it anywhere. But I know students on here talked about it. Said he flipped off the scorer’s table.

someone said they thought he flipped the fans off… not sure where I read that, probably on here.

He should be fined for going after officials.
And know one ever spells it Saint Louis. It is always St. Louis.

Zerogeneticsdc brought it up in the post game thread. It was debated over who it was actually directed at, but it happened.

Saint Louis Billikens

Speaking of Majerus, during our game on Saturday he told the officials they had called a foul on the wrong player. The refs stopped the game and reviewed the tape for 4 minutes. Last night, the same thing happened to us, Lutz told the officials…nothing happened. Lutz even got a tech shortly after that. I’m glad things are consistent throughout the league…

• Apparently, what Rick Majerus wants, Majerus gets. Very early in the first half while Charlotte had possession of the ball, Majerus argued to an official the wrong Charlotte player had been called for a foul on the previous play.

What did the referees do? Stopped play immediately and spent the next four minutes looking at video replay to see if Majerus was right.

That couldn’t wait for a dead ball or timeout?

I know! I couldn’t figure out what was going on at the St. Louis game. I’m glad an explanation was given by Jim, but I am disappointed that it happened that way. It didn’t cause anyone to foul out one way or another so it didn’t require stopping play. And as for consistency from night-to-night… :lmao: it’s the A10! Bruno is a lame duck and her predecessor has their work cut out for them in terms of officiating.

Thanks to everyone. I know that Jim sits on the other side of the court. What he noted in his observations after the SLU game was this:

Again, thanks!

GO NINERS!!!

I saw it. Rick totally flipped them off. I was so surprised that I saw what I saw that I didn’t even react right away. I didn’t believe it at first I guess cause I didn’t even remember anything that would invoke that type of reaction.

Run, what is wrong with “St. Louis?” Why must it be “Saint Louis?”

Side note: big ups to Majerus for speaking his opinion. Dissent! Dissent! Dissent!

I’m pretty sure I saw it written by a reporter somewhere… I don’t know. My memory is pretty bad.

Wow, I hate to say it but maybe the A-10 does hate us? Add this to the La Salle debacle and you kind of wonder who the refs are really pulling for…

I went back and read the Big O and P-D stories (and blogs) and didn’t see anything about that specific incident. I’m sure someone will bring it to Timmermann’s attention and perhaps he will comment on it on the Billiken Blog at STLToday.com.

BTW, my memory is really bad, but then I’m 48 years old!

Yeah, where was the ref asking if Majerus had offended anyone else? Since that was a concern with Lutz at LaSalle that has still not been given any light.

Well, I’m only 24 but I blame it on the alcohol…

Know one nos how to spell it.

From the SLU website:

Saint Louis University The "Saint" in Saint Louis University is always spelled out, and the entire name of the University is always used on first reference. You may substitute "the University" or "SLU" in second references.

The ironic thing is that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch refuses to spell out “Saint” in pieces about SLU . Go figure!

He should be fined for going after officials. And know one ever spells it Saint Louis. It is always St. Louis.

The way the A-10 officials behave, a screwed up Majerus is better than a rational officiating crew.

What they are saying on the Billiken board – which isn’t a lot, actually…

Billikens.com: Majerus going nuts…

“Charlotte came into the A-10 at the same time as SLU, is not a contender this season, so there’s no reason for the A-10 to be benefiting Charlotte, especially when there is talk that Charlotte will leave the A-10 if it gets a football program.”

Charlotte? Benefitting from the refs? Does that happen? Damn, now I really wish I wouldn’t have missed that game. Also, other people are talking about Charlotte Football. That’s good.
