Earliest Niners memory

What is the furthest back you can vividly remember anything about seeing the Niners in person?

I’m almost 22 years old, so my memory of the Niners doesnt go back as far as some of you alums, but it probably goes back way past most of my fellow students.

I remember meeting Alexander Kuehl after the Niners played an away game at UNC Wilmington. God that guy was HUGE. I shook his hand, and my arm just about dissapeared. Beast of a center, and real nice guy.

Seeing a Green-White scrimmage in the Mine Shaft on November 10, 1975 when I visited and was told they wanted me to be the chief statistician.

Obviously the entire 1976-77 season; a phantom charging call vs. Wake Forest, a snowy weekend at Saint Francis, the inaugural Sun Belt Tournament, the Dance and the heartache.

Road trips to Atlanta for Georgia State.

Overtime victory over Davidson.

I’m stopping now… it’s taxing my brain. :hammer:

my first memory as well.

i was watching tv during school when that happened it. i wanted chapel hill to lose soooo badly. Thats when i decided to go to Charlotte. But recently found out that charlotte didn’t have what i wanted to major in.

Being at a game when it was only me & Hal Wissel was there. The place use to be so empty. They had no talent.Only one decent player and that was Clinton Hinton and he left to go Oral Roberts.Kieth Williams was pretty good player.

I was a Chapel hill fan at this point, at that last game changed my mind for good. I was in school then as well and didnt even know Charlotte had a team. But about a week after that my dad moved to charlotte right off Mallard creek ch. rd. and i rode past the campus. From that point on, i never wore a peice of Crapple hill clothing, or pulled for them again. I came to school the next week in Charlotte gear and havent turned back since, and never will. my 5 closest freinds all thought i was stupid, but look where they are now......3 alums of THE UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE and one still in school here.

God i love this school

First experience with the Niners would be watching them in the final four in '77. Until then, I had never heard of them.

My first basketball game was Niners vs. West Virginia at the coliseum. It was believed that the winner of the game would be ranked in the upcoming top 25 college basketball poll. Unfortunately, we lost.

I can’t remember the year to save me though…

This will tell you how ancient I am, but my earliest Niners memories
go back to the early 70’s when Bill Foster put together back-to-back
20 win seasons in 73-74 and 74-75. We were not a member of a
conference at that time and played teams like Samford and Olglethorpe
along with a lot of Southern Conf. schools. Those two teams set
the table for the Niners majical run to the NIT finals in 75-76 when new
coach Lee Rose led Cedric Maxwell,Melvin Watkins and Lew Massey to
glory.

Olglethorpe was awesome…shouldnt they be in the A-10 now?

Note sarcasm

Haha but wow, you must be ancient! Great memories though!

1988-89 season, they went to the NIT.

As a 7 year old, went running with my uncle for the first time ever for 4 miles down Randolph road. Came down with the flu as a result of the physical strain. Watched the Niners game with Marquette on TV. Hated the ending.

After that, it was the 80s and many a blurry night crying next to the radio as the Niners got pounded by the likes of Jacksonville and Eckerd. My first Niner game in person would have been one of many my father took me to in the 80s, but I have purposely forgotten that misery.

That was probably my first memory too. I'm almost positive I saw that game, but at that time I was still wearing fairy blue.

I was a junior in high school and worked at a sporting goods store in Mayberry Mall in Mt. Airy. The Niners were led by Colson and Johnson and were ranked 17th in the nation. They were playing App State; my best friend was a freshman forward for App State and I was at work listening to the game on ASU radio. I was being recruited to play football at App and had no clue that I would end up at Charlotte. My girlfriend went to App and I spent most weekends in Boone. With those things a factor I was routing like hell for App.

For those that don’t recall, ASU upset the Niners. I think Johnson was out for that game. That is my earliest Niners memory.

I was six years old when we played UConn in the NIT and Dad took me. I think I was pretty amazed by Henry Williams.

First live game was fall of '84. Don’t remember any particulars, but I remember the 5-23 record, Keith Williams, Ray Growolwicz, Scott Fitz-something? and students wearing bags over their heads at the Coliseum (Independence). RPI or actually I think it was Sagarin ratings was bottom 10 in the nation (300+).

As a 9 or 10 year old, I remember my cousins went absolutely nuts watching UNCC beat State in the NIT semis. I think it went down to the final seconds and we made a tip in or they missed one.

I was at the Colisuem with my dad watching a game in the early Nineties. Don’t remember anything about the game. All I can remember is that a guy cheerleader nearly dropped a girl on her head. It shook him up so bad he had to go sit in the corner with his head in his hands.

Hey, I was there with my dad. He was a WVU alum but a UNCC professor (we pulled for the 9ers), and it was Henry Williams’ first game. I remember we kept wondering who the freshman who kept hitting 3’s was.

I do remember watching that team with Dan Plondke, Byron Dinkins, Cedric Ball, and Jeff West alot as a kid. Must have been our first year with season tickets, so…about 20 years ago, the 1987 season.

I’m a sophomore now. The first game I ever saw before I even considered coming to Charlotte was the game vs. NC State in the NCAA. I remember Plavich was burying State with 3s, then State coming back to win it. I never really knew anything about Charlotte’s program before that, and that created a lot of my initial respect for the program. Not long after that, I met my future best friend and now roommate and he was a big reason for me getting introduced to Charlotte as a school I might want to attend.
