As a graduate of UNC Greensboro, I have a ton of respect for what Charlotte has done when it comes to having a program that is a player on a national scale. I wish we could get the program in Greensboro to be half as successful as you guys…
First of all, we will always be stuck with the “UNC G” moniker. You guys did the right thing by dropping the UNC part. Unfortunately, just using GREENSBORO wouldn’t work for us b/c its a small city. It also just doesn’t sound good.
You guys have a great mascot…ours is so generic that it makes me sick. I mean, the Spartans are the cheerleaders on SNL for crying out loud.
You guys actually have students camping out for games…and we can’t sell out our tiny little gym even though our school has around 13,000 students.
Maybe I expect too much too soon…we’ve only been Division I for 13 years…and we have made 2 NCAA trips and 1 NIT appearance…but I would just love to see us develop a following like you guys have.
Maybe our problem comes from being stuck right in the middle of Tobacco Road…it just seems that no one cares about the team…even alumni who live here in Greensboro. Our coach is a great recruiter…see Dickie V’s “Diaper Dandy of the Week” last week…but his X’s and O’s are a little lacking.
Anyway, sorry to rant…but I respect what you guys are doing…and I hope that one day we could get to the point you guys are at.
UNCG has a long way to go. But you never know, look at what Davidson is doing this year, or what College of Charleston used to do. ETSU had Cincy on the ropes last year.
Biggest screw job by the committee ever…Holy Cross. Three years in a row they were 16 or 15 seeds and they gave their opponent everything they could handle. That’s a team that could have had a chance to make some noise if they had gotten a little more respect from the committee. Wasn’t it Uk they took the wire before ultimately falling short. THey were fun to watch back then.

Well, there's already a Greensboro College too.
I saw UNCG either early this season or late last season on Fox Sports South in a SoCon game… they’re not too bad. I actually wouldn’t mind playing them as long as we got a 2-for-1 for it. And our one away game was at the Greensboro Coliseum. Holy crap, I’ve become a regular ACC asshole.
Seriously, though, if we’re not gonna play App we could consider UNCG for a series.
I have many friends who made the choice to go to UNCG and they all have a different opinion of the school. I always appreciate it any compliments we get at Charlotte. Good luck UNCG!

For the record, UNCG is considered to be academically better than unc-chapel hill in some programs. Of course, we are too.
I am told the same thing about 75% of the high schools in NC :D
I’m not going to make any drastic statements and say UNCG is a better school than Carolina…but we do have some very well respected programs. However, it does seem to me that some schools get credit for being a great university just because they have well known athletic teams. I’m not saying that Carolina is one of these…I like the Heels…
As an alum of Charlotte and a current grad student at UNCG, I have to say I don’t get very excited about Spartan sports. UNCG definitely has less avid sports fans in general than Charlotte. And you see a LOT more ACC gear on campus in the Gate City than in the Queen City. Maybe if UNCG had a football team there’d be more sports enthusiasm.
UNCG doesn’t need to drop the UNC prefix as much as Charlotte does. At least the “G” is dissimilar from the “C” common to both Charlotte and Chapel Hill. (For that matter, the CH is also common to both, adding to the confusion no doubt.)
And yes, UNCG has a heck of an academic reputation, particularly in education and in the arts (music, film, etc.). And the graduate school is one of the best in the state.
we have a great baseball program…and probably the best baseball stadium in the state…and our soccer program was #1 this year. but in NC, if you aren’t a top tier team in b-ball, its like you don’t exist!
good point about the ACC gear on campus…that is another difference with Charlotte and UNCG. Very few UNCG students consider the Spartans their “favorite” team…most are fans of an ACC team but also pull for the Spartans. Charlotte actually has a ton of fans that don’t pull for any other teams. If UNCG played the Heels in the NCAA tourney like you guys did back in '98, most of the students on campus (apart from Dook/State fans) would have pulled for the Heels over their own school.
UNCG is a good program. I remember them coming to the Old Charlotte Coliseum in the late 90’s and taking the game right down to the wire. According to RPI, they are the 2nd best team in the SoCon. UNCG would be a much better NonCom opponent then App State and UNCA.
Plus, you guys are much closer to that G D’d ACC. Better days are hopefully ahead. I have much respect for the SoCon.
thanks for the kind words…the SoCon is down this year but Davidson is taking care of business (as usual). I think that being right in the middle of Wake, Dook, UNC, and State really hurts our fan support. I think it helps our recruiting b/c everyone knows about Tobacco Road…but many people stay home to watch ACC games on TV instead of driving over to Fleming Gym to watch the Spartans.

back in those days UNCG had Scotty Hartzell who was one of the top three point shooters and free throw shooters in the country. His jersey is one of the few retired at UNCG
