Sorry Mean Joe. Glen Campbell was a member of the wrecking crew and played on numerous songs during the 60’s and 70’s. He was a terrific self taught guitarist and also had perfect pitch. He wasn’t a shredder but he was a mighty talented guitarist.

Joe Walsh over that

Pretty sure Vai could do any Campbell
if you are the most talented and educated musical genius in any room you have ever been since you were 18, chances are, your name is Steve Vai

Recorded in 1984, The Attitude Song

Been watching vids of Adrian Belew’s recent BEAT project in which he is joined by his one time King Crimson bandmate Tony Levin as well as Steve Vai and Danny Carey to perform King Crimson pieces from the 1980s. Also dipped into the 1970s for the title track to Red.

Two completely different approaches to guitar, but you know that. Campbell has passed away but I would venture to guess that given a couple of hours and the correct equipment he could play Vai, Satriani, Walsh, et al. Is he better? No. Are they better? No. It is all opinion. And opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they all stink.

In the interim, take a few minutes to research the Wrecking Crew. I think you would be impressed. There is a movie streaming about them. These guys and gals could play anything and their backgrounds were in jazz and classical music. Their heyday was the 60’s and early 70’s so shredding wasn’t around then.

I agree two different approaches, but disagree Campbell could ever play Vai. Physically, mentally and experience wise, Vai is kind of similar to say Michael Jordan. Those kind of mixes and excellence cannot be duplicated. Doesn’t mean there are not other greats around them and before them
