Expanded men's college soccer season?

Proposal would expand men’s soccer across fall and spring semesters with College Cup being played in spring.

Charlotteobserver.com: Expanded men’s college soccer season possible

This is a must change if the NCAA wants its soccer product to continue improving.

I agree… this and substitutions.

I’m not advocating a hard cap of three, but I do think that once you’re out, you should be done for the game.

Longer season. Running clock. FIFA substitution rules, but raised to 5 rather than 3.

What is the FIFA substitution rule? I confess, I do not know. I am no soccer expert.

Once you are subbed for, you are done, and only 3 subs per game.

I agree with making it 5.

This is an absolute MUST. It would improve the product overall and improve the preparation of the players leading to better national team prospects.

Like everyone has said, change the ridiculous countdown clock and institute regular sub rules however I would be ok with six substitutions as these are amateur players.

Wasn’t sure what thread to put this in.

While I would love a longer college soccer season, I despise the reason they are trying to do it. College soccer was still relatively untainted by all the damn :moneybag: grabs.

Looks like that’s about over.

Finally found the original thread from 2014. Coaches etc have wanted this to happen for some time, with former Niner men’s soccer HC Jeremy Gunn a longtime proponent.

A vote had been scheduled in 2020 but pandemic put it on the back burner.

From March 2020:

Very interesting.

So basically more games longer season with a winter break right? Don’t most of the euro pro leagues have a long winter break? That would work well with the academic calendar.

It’s not about that, it’s about 30-40 schools ruining soccer the same way they are ruining CFB.

Getting caught up and found this on Wiki. (Like the tabled 2020 vote, the 2022 vote was postponed as well.)

College soccer - Wikipedia.

Among the college coaches interviewed for this 2018 piece was former Niner HC Jeremy Gunn, a very vocal proponent of the change:

The long season isn’t the issue!

Yet, the premise of how it’s going to work is simple and moving forward: The top 40-50 programs in college soccer are lining up their ducks in a row to go to the NCAA (if they haven’t already) and ask them to cooperate in this new venture.

NCAA is losing the amateurism battle right now in many sports. They don’t have much leverage. I believe the pitch is “work in cooperation with US Soccer in this venture or we will completely breakaway from the NCAA and join the US Soccer umbrella.”

From discussions I’ve had, it sounds like this new landscape would be classified as “semi-professional” in how it would work.

College soccer going to break away and become a shitty minor league just like CFB.

And will you still be upset if we are one of the 40-50 programs? If we aren’t, then this isn’t a league of the 40-50 best programs.

clt says we have a top 20-25 soccer program

It’s the pro $ component. That is all I care about.

Soccer was far less corrupted. It was the sport the SEC “let” us compete in.

At this point each program really should reach out to pro franchises and national teams and work with them.

Imagine if we just told the panthers we will be your farm team. Let them recruit and place HS here they want and they pay them. Go ahead and take the next step and make it like minor league baseball. Let our soccer be the CLT FC academy.

Easy for SEC to allow us to compete since they don’t sponsor men’s soccer.

Anyway, most recent top 50 list I can find has us #21:
