Lefty, I wasnāt blaming anyone. Iām satisfied with the record, other than who the losses were against. However, if you do think this team has achieved/overschieved this season, other than in terms of victories, look at the game scores again.

I agree with that as well. I'm just saying that you can have bad FG shooting nights or run into a hot defense, but if you pound it inside and hit your FT's you can have a chance to win.
Believe it or not, we tried to go inside alot yesterday, at one point Withers was
unstoppable then we āforgotā about hinm for the last 12 minutes of the gameā¦
Baldwin would not look to penetrate i think the shoulder bothers him, but
we have no other pg.
What I was really suprised at was Basden.
he is our rock, our go to guy, he should have known what kind of game to expect, but hey, he has carried us all year.
Originally posted by jcl49er@Jan 30 2005, 08:56 AM It's certainly a liability in close games BUT when we play a team like ECU, we should never be in a position to have missed free throws decide the outcome. We're a far better team than they are and we should have led comfortably for 40 minutes. We had a great chance early in the 2nd half to put the game away but we let them crawl right back in. When you let teams like that hang around, they start believing. Dude ECU has some ballers in Greenville. They are not a bad team once they get rolling. Dont say they are a bad team cause we watched them play once. The better team did win yesterday.
HUH???
You must have been drunk or did not watch the game one team did win, but to say they were better donāt think so
He is an ECU fan, he was cheering for us to lose before the game ever started.

QUOTE (GoNinersGo @ Jan 30 2005, 12:45 PM)
My expectations:
I expect this program to be a top 40 program every year. We have pretty much been able to do that for a while. We should also be able to make it out of the 2nd round at least once. On the bright sideā¦we have come a LONG way. I remember going to games at the Charlotte Coliseum and Independence Arena where we wore our green and gold unis and played on an orange and blue floor. It was awful. Attendance back then was not very good except for one or two games a year. Now we have halton arena (which came after I graduated), attendance IS better, we have Charlotte on our unis rather than UNC Charlotte, we actually play on TV, and we are an NCAA team almost every year.
Those things are great but the frustration on this board is not about losing but it is (as someone else has said) who we lose to and how we lose some games. I mean how do we lose to ECU, donāt even show up for Cincy (earlier game), and give away games like Rutgers and Alabama? Donāt forget that if it was not for a prayer we would have lost to Indiana as well. That is extremely frustrating. Not to mention, when we get within sniffing distance of the Top 25 we ALWAYS lay an egg. The Top 25 is not what gets us into the NCAA but we canāt get any recognition in the state, much less the nation because we never make it in.
This loss leaves us with a lot of work to do. We can put this behind us if we take care of business at home (@ SLU, aargh) and steal a game or two on the road. Once again we have a fine line to walk. BUT I have confidence we can do it, I hope!

However, if you do think this team has achieved/overschieved this season, other than in terms of victories, look at the game scores again. Ok, I see what you're saying. Performance-wise, we have underachieved. We have very good talent but haven't put it all together. There's still time, fortunately.
How about Itiās shouting match with Lutz on the sideline yesterday? Benching him the rest of the game is a start, but it needs to go further. Nance better start Saturday.
would ITi have done that to Knight, K, or Huggins? Alright, fine those coaches have a bigger rep and have accomplished more. But I couldnāt imagine Huggins or even Jim Calhoun taking shit like that from a player back in the mid 80s when they were working their way up.
Lutz needs to let the team know he is boss.
Thankfully I was skiing yesterday and missed the debacle at EZU (although upon seeing the score scroll across the TV screen, I immediately downed a beer). I think the following are appropriate expectations:
- To field a basketball team with a legitimate chance for post-season play EVERY year (yes, even the NIT).
- At least 3 out of every 5 years make the NCAA tournament.
- Aim to be and maintain status as a Top 40 program (which weāve done since 1997).
- Advance past the first round in the NCAA tournament when we make it. Additionally, a round of 16 appearance should be a reasonable expectation for our club. Yes, I know that this is almost entirely dependent upon seeding and the damn 8/9 game we ALWAYS get and usually deserve.
What frustrates me the most is our lack of being able to close the deal. Dating back to the late 90ās, weāve have several chances to capitalize on situations that would have put this program in the national spotlight: Demarcoās senior year when we were ranked to start the season and then quickly shit the bed to waste that pub; losing to OKlahoma, Illinois, Notre Dame, and Texas Tech in the NCAAās in non-flattering fashion (i.e. our asses got handed to us); completely falling apart last year against St. Louis just 48 hours after knocking off Louisville; and now we totally overlook or underestimate ECU and lose our shot to garner a ranking and a weekās worth of great national publicity leading up to the Cincy game.
We just canāt seem to close the deal! I know that injuries and illness have hurt our chances from time to time (Versile not being 100%, KP and Jobey with food poisoning, Charles Hayward - RIP), but other schools go through these things too. We need to start capitalizing on the chances we get, especially since theyāll be fewer and further between once we get to the A-10. Iām sure that recruits would stand up and take notice. Maybe we get the Justin Grayās, Travis Garrisonās, Jarret Jackās, DeMarr Johnsonās, Quemont Greerās etc. if we just take that next step.
There. I feel better now.
Respectfully,
96Niner
are you guys blind? money is not the problem, we have more buildings being built than the whole city of Baghdad right now⦠our coach makes a half million dollars a year and our players drive around campus in Mercedez Benz, stop whining about money we simply just choked!!
who has the benz???
yeahā¦whoās got the fancy wheels?
i dont want to reveal any names but iāve been at school here for 4 years and seen numersous players driving fancy cars, i cant be the only one to see it!!
I was going to start another topic similar to this, but this works. There have been 28 schools that have played in at least 7 of the last 10 NCAA tournaments, They are:
Arizona
Cincinnati
Charlotte
Connecticut
Duke
Florida
Gonzaga
Illinois
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisville
Maryland
Michigan State
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Purdue
Stanford
Syracuse
Temple
Texas
UCLA
Utah
Valparaiso
Wake Forest
Wisconsin
Xavier
24 of these 28 are what I consider perennial Top 25 teams. Valpo wins their conference every year and makes it in. The other 2 teams are Temple and Xavier, the 2 teams from the conference we are about to join. I think this means that we are going to be exactly where we need to be, in the A-10. I also think that we are a Top 30 program based on the company we keep in the NCAA Tournament.
However, 27 of the 28 teams have made at least one Sweet 16 appearance during that time, and 26 of those have made it to at least the Elite 8. What does that say about our program? I donāt think the blame can be put on Lutz, because this period spans 3 different coaches. Many people say that we always blow our big chance to get noticed or make some noise. I disagree totally. We always seem to win the huge game on national TV against the ranked opponet (see Syracuse, Cincinnati, Louisville), but always lose to Boston U., Rutgers, St. Louis, E. Carolina, and thus get stuck in the 8/9 game every year.
Bill Parcells always says āYou are what your record is.ā Maybe heās right. Maybe all we are to expect is a 1st or 2nd round exit 7 out of every 10 years. I donāt like it. I hope it changes, but the numbers are what they are. Perhaps in the near future we can change this trend and advance farther than in the recent past. I think this team has the ability to do it, but maybe I shouldnāt expect it to?
Our talent is as good as we ever had but we are still just a little bit away from landing the player(s) to take you over the hump into the top 20. We seem to make the short list but never close the deal. Take the following players: Rondo, Morrow, Wafer, Gee. These are kids we seriously had a great chance with and missed out.
Take one of those four and put him on this years team and you could make the arguement that you might only have 2 losses and a top 20 ranking for the entire year. That is just the way it goes. Maybe we are just destined to always come up a little bit short. We seem to be developing a pattern.

Thatās the way I see it, too. Donāt forget Jarret Jack, Kyle Lowry, Travis Garrison, and Mike Jones. Weāre just not at the top 25 level on a consistent basisā¦unless of course you are basing it on NCAA appearances as Smoothie pointed out. 7 out of the last 10 years is pretty good. Major programs like FSU, Clemson, Virginia, Auburn would love to be that consistent.

I donāt like it eitherā¦but how does it change? I donāt follow recruiting very closely but from reading around here, it seems Lutz is repeatedly very close with certain recruits. I think the names of Rondo, Morrow, Wafer, Gee have been throw around. What needs to change? I donāt like hearing that Lutz is always close to getting top recruits. Thatās impressive for a couple of seasons, but somewhere it needs to change. Why not now?
Maybe Iām wrong, but Iām sick & tired of the 49ers promoting that they make the NCAA tourney. Sure a lot of schools would be happy to be in this position, but why is that important? I donāt care about the other schools. I care about what it takes for this schoolās team to get to the next level.

Weāre still getting some talented guysā¦donāt get me wrong. But weāve missed on one or two that would have put us over the hump, IMO. Some people will call it excuses but when the top talent in NC chooses (see KC Rivers) a bad ACC school (Clemson, FSU, VT) over us, then you know itās tough to recruit. Thatās the impact of the ACC on us. Itās also why we are recruiting the DC area, Florida, the JUCOS, and basketball prep schools like Laurinburg and Mt Zion.
Lutzās style, our consistency at making the tournament and winning, and the Charlotte area are reasons why guys choose to play here.
A couple of in-state guys to keep an eye on are Doneal Mack at Statesville Christian, Smith at Central Cabarrus, and Goode at Providence Day.
