Mental Jewelry is the first Live album you were speaking of and it was very good as well. I’m not saying Live was one of the greatest bands ever and never meant to have this long of a discussion. I just think they are off the radar now, like too many good bands and I am happy to see them get some exposure.
Yes, that was their first full album. Operation Spirit got them quite a bit of airplay, and it suprised the hell out of them. This however, preceded that album, and was the first thing I heard by them:

I think Good Pain was on that EP. Liked both of those songs. then again, I loved the toss off song on Throwing Copper. Still do. It holds up even better than the rest of the album.

But really, for me, they just occupy the same memory niche with a ton of 90’s bands, like Belly, Breeders (damn I forgot to say the Pixies in my original post), Catherine Wheel, etc and even one hit wonders like The Smoking Popes and The Toadies (“Tyler” is still hauntingly kickass).

The Pixies and The Toadies rock…

played Tyler so many times I wore out the CD. Great to see another Toadies fan!

Janes Addiction
Porno For Pyros
Phish
Tool
Queens of the Stone Age
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Police
The Mars Volta
Grateful Dead

Im really glad to seen Queens of the Stone Age on so many lists. They are amazingly under rated but at least have not been ruined by commercialism. Songs for the Deaf is great all the way through you like true rock. I wish Nick Oliveri would come back.

I've gotten into a angst teen rock phase in my old age I'm Diggin'

QOTSA

Tintin

Please dont say angst teen rock and QOTSA in the same context haha.

Any other ska fans out there?
How can you be a ska fan without Fishbone in there. Def check em out if you havnt heard em.
Pretty much anything by Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five is amazing.
Did you see Ben on Austin City Limits? It was a pretty cool show.

What passes for SKA these days? I’m outta the loop on that one…

I love the whole Ska/Punk/Dancehall style…Groups like Sublime have set LBC on fire with this genre…Check out Pepper…Long Beach Dub Allstars…Short Bus…Slightly Stoopid…Burn Unit…

Great bunch of bands!!!

Pepper is pretty good though their singer does try and be just like the singer from Sublime. From what I can tell they only have a few good songs too. Hoes is a great song tho.

Im curious has anyone in the Charlotte area heard of Offshore? They were basically a high school band from Central Cabarrus. They were actually pretty damn good but I think they broke up. I’ve got a live cd from them. They have one song im telling you could be a top #10 hit. …Well not in todays world of manufactured hits but its possible. They play originals as well as Bob, Sublime, and Pepper. They did an awsome version of Could You Be Loved.

I like the '80’s.
Aerosmith, Poison, Bangles, Depeche Mode, Def Leppard, '80’s Bon Jovi.

I could NOT agree more.

I usually can’t get through a week without listening to “Party at Ground Zero,” “Bonin’ in the Boneyard,” or “Everyday Sunshine!”

Seriously! Fishbone is soooo good! I actually played their stuff at my HS battle of the bands. I played Baritone and basically filled in for the trombone parts. We had a bari sax, trumpet, lead and base guitar, and drums all in cool suits so we didnt half ass it. (Would have been nice to have a keyboard player tho.) I got to do lead vocals which was so cool. There is nothing like being on a stage playing music you love. And we were pretty damn good too. The crowd of between 500 and 1000 went crazy. Kids were throwing stuff and semi-moshing. Some how this big inflatable punching doll got thrown on stage and my brother (lead guitar) kicked it off. They had to shut the place down for a couple minutes after us to clean the place up and to tell everybody not to throw stuff. We played “Poem Dance/Instrumntal” and “Pink Vapor Stew” which is basically the extended and much better version of “Party At Ground Zero.” In between we had a little riff session thingy where a few of the guys played the toon to “Skankin’ To The Beat” and me and the bass player showed everyone how to ska dance. Arguabley one of the bests days/nights of my life.

Did you win? It sounds like you should have.

At my school, anyone with a good horn section usually ran away with the competition. My senior year we arranged an instrumental version of Incubus’ “Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song)” and jammed on “Chameleon” and the crowd loved it.

Also one of my best memories from High School.

Nope. I think we got 2nd or 3rd. They didnt announce runners up, just the winner. We lost to some group that played a whole bunch of like emo crap and played way over their alloted amount of time. They were talented but their music sucked. Honestly I would say they were better tho. I had a hard time playing my solo in “Pink Vapor Stew” and the stupid sound crew didnt do my mic right so you could barely hear me singing. One judge said we ‘lacked a lead presence,’ but that was because my mic wasnt loud enough. But I was able to pull off Angelo Moore’s notorious screams so that was cool.

 1. Dave Matthews Band
 2. Jason Mraz
 3. Sublime
 4. Parliament
 5. Bob Marley
 6. Outkast
 7. G Love and the Special Sauce
 8. Jack Johnson
 9. Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
 10. Death Cab for Cutie
 11. All Mighty Senators- if any of you haven’t seen them live at Visualite, you MUST go. Great live band!
 12. Maroon 5
 13. Modest Mouse

3 doors down

You think you could get me some Fishbone songs over AIM or something? I’m being exposed to the world of ska one band at a time, and no one had ever mentioned Fishbone to me before.

Out of curiosity what did some of you guys think about the Staind concert last night?
Out of curiosity what did some of you guys think about the Staind concert last night?
Metallica (again, early years)
Queensryche
Van Halen (early years)
Type O Negative
