Field Hockey?

Does Charlotte have a field hockey team? Found this article on USCHO.com but can’t find a team page anywhere.

I’m totally hijacking this thread, my apologies.

Forever the optimist, I’m sure we will have football. When it does happen we need some Title IX sports for the ladies to play. What sports will we see, how many will be needed?

Jackrabbit mentions Field Hockey, that and Lacrosse are low overhead sports from a start up standpoint as we already have a field suitable for both sports.

Golf? Seems to be a no brainier.

I’m guessing we stay away from swimming/Diving (unless we can use the Meck Aquatic Center)

Why not swimming? I seem to recall that we had a swimming & diving team at one point. Plus, do the facilities in Belk not accomadate such a team?

In 4 1/2 years as a student, I never once laid eyes on the pool. Is it big enough? Hell, add that to the low overhead column.

In the Belk Gym. Under the basketball courts. 25 Meters, so half-olympic…

It’s not in hot shape… Atleast compared to what I’ve seen at other schools. Even the locker rooms are crappy. Also, I know it’s a pool (and I used to Lifeguard), but 20 mins in there is enough to give you a migraine on some days with the level of chemicals in the pool.

Yeah, it’s been 4 or 5 years since I’ve been in there, so I wasn’t sure of my memory.

I thought I heard that the pool isn’t large enough for some reason or another. I don’t know if that’s true at all, but that’s what I remember.

It’s probably big/deep enough for a swim team, but I’m not sure about the Diving team aspect.

I bet we’ll definitely add women’s golf though.

I now recall. It is 25 meters which I believe is junior oplympic sized. It must be 50 meters long for Olympic. But I think NCAA can hold competitions in a junior olympic… Maybe it’s the number of lanes…

Teams with field hockey are requied to play on field turf (artificial). It is supposedly easier on the legs and the uniformity obviously makes it safer. They also have to heavily water it (???) before games are played according to the rules.

You would have a large up front cost for the field initially, but would be releatively inexpnsive after that point. Maybe we can get lucky and be like Wake Forest in field hockey: 9 NCAA appearances, 8 NCAA semi-final appearances, 3 NCAA championships (2002, 2003, 2004) or Duke: 2006 NCAA semi-finalist, 3 NCAA runners-up (2003, 2004, 2005).

Artificial turf gets dirty, so it has to be rinsed. I’ve also heard that if it gets a lot of sun it can get pretty hot, think of Plastic getting heated up.

Nice hijack. But considering the article stated that Charlotte had won back-to-back A10 championships do we have a team or not?

Link to article, Jack? I see that site as an college ice hockey web site.

There is a club team for that, UNC Charlotte Ice Hockey.

Yeah I have seen the club hockey, but the article states an actual A10 championship. I am going to to A10 site to see.

The word ā€˜article’ should be the link.

I believe the article about Charlotte Field Hockey was really about womens soccer.

I believe you are right sir. Makes a lot more sense now.

At the football meeting they listed Annual Title IX expenses for :

Women’s Field hockey $537,000
Women’s Lacrosse $537,000
Womens Swimming $538,000

TOTAL $ 1,612,000

I remember Duke and Chapel Hill catching hell for watering their artificial fields during the worst months of the drought over the summer.

I’m okay with Lacrosse, I had already thought that. Golf is fine, but I’d prefer Ice Hockey to Field Hockey for the girls as part of our Football team title 9.
