Thatās what I think is best.
+1
Well, I think Iām in the fire the coach camp. We do recruit well though.
agree. he has to go
Do it now.
Yeah, I think itās time.
Itās really awful that it has come to this, but you cannot reward this performance with loyalty.
This.
Hereās the email I just sent to Rose and DuBois:
-------------
AD Rose and Chancellor DuBoisā
First off, thank you both for taking the time to read my email. I understand that both of you are incredibly busy with your obligations and I appreciate all that you do for the university.
I am a 1998 graduate of UNC Charlotte. I remember camping out several times for tickets to play rivals like Cincinnati and Memphis. I have attended games under Coaches Mullins, Watkins, Lutz, and Major. I live just outside of Atlanta, so I am not able to attend many home games. I do, however, make every effort to attend away basketball games when the Niners play in this area (KSU, GT, Mercer). I have followed the basketball program since I began my undergraduate studies in 1993.
I have to admit that the current direction of the basketball program is disheartening. I honestly am tired of hearing, ānext year, next year.ā I realize that lots of factors play into decision making (budgets, contracts, recruiting impacts, and availability of candidates). I know we have been paying Coaches Lutz and Major for the last several seasons. And, while no one wants the university to be in the same situation again, I must express my desire for a change.
Coach Major performed well in his AC position with OSU. However, I do not feel he has made any positive difference at UNC Charlotte ā in fact, I think the direction of the basketball program has taken a turn for the worse since his arrival (not including the move to C-USA). With the player dismissals, transfers, attendance decline, and the complete collapse of last season (and this season so far) after such promising starts⦠I do not think Coach Major is our āsolutionā to returning to the NCAA tournament.
I understand that Coach Major just received an extension after last season. But, he is just not performing well enough to retain his position, in my opinion. I trust that I am not the only Niner who feels this way. And, while I know my opinion may not carry any weight, I hope it will at least be taken into consideration.
As I write this, I am watching the Niners suffer an upset loss at home to a very bad Marshall team.
I wish I was in a financial position to donate a large sum of money to the university athletic department for the āCan Major Fund.ā Unfortunately, I do not.
Please consider the long-term consequences of retaining Coach Major past the 2013-14 season. Will keeping him for another 1-2 years create such a benefit to the university to offset the damage already done?
Thank you for listening.
He has to go this year, the bleeding is out of control. He is a descant recruiter, just doesnāt have what it takes to head coach
i have not followed the game until now other than hearing we were up 8-4 early. we can no longer say that this team just plays badly on the road. if you cant beat a bad marshall team at home then what is the point of the good recruiting if you cannot get these kids to play. something is going on here that i think is not as simple as him being a bad coach. he has had plenty of games in his tenure wh"outcoached" great coaches like stevens and pearl. i dont know what the deal is. we need to fire him and just find the money to hire bruce pearl or someone. at this point i would be fine with hiring a byron dinkins if we could get a former head coach to be his assistant. good x and oās coach and has connections.
He got a fair shake. Let him coach out the year and then let him go.
i get that it is not as simple as firing him, continue to pay him and go get a quality head coach but while we suffer through mediocrity, think about the money lost from not making the tournament, not winning games in the tournament, declining attendance and money from concessions, declining merchandise sales and alumni donations. i think it is short sided to retain him for monetary purposes when we are losing money by keeping him.
I seriously hope you folks are emailing the right people.
We are on course for a losing season. Three out of four seasons is unacceptable. This guy was supposed to take us to the the next level but has taken us down the toilet.
Did we start Ben cherry and bench Lester again? I gave up on this season a few games ago but I just saw we lost again at home. You can go ahead and put me on the fire major list. If you look at my post I have probably been one of majors biggest advocates on the boards but I give up. I have been a niner fan since I was 14 years old and Iām now 37. Watchig the ranked niners beat uncw on a hemry williams buzzer beater in 1990 is what made me choose charlotte to get my engineering degree.
I have officially thrown in the towel on niner bball. Most of my die hard niner friends gave up on us around 2007 but I stuck it out. Now essentially a decade into this decline to obscurity there are absolutely no redeeming qualities associated with niner basketball. We have hit rock bottom and I am over it. There is zero pride left. Itās become beyond embarrassing. Fire major, fire Judy, fire the guy who reads tickets at the door for all I care! Ill check back in around 2020 and see how things are going. Niner basketball is dead.
What a miserable season. Losing to Marshall at home sinks to a new low.
I think this complete collapse makes it pretty clear that Major is not working out. I was pretty sure heād get to coach the team next year as a last gasp chance to make up for this seasonās shortcomings, but I didnāt think there was any way the team could collapse like this.
I have basically no expectations of another win this season. Iāll still watch because Iām a diehard fan. I really hope the team can salvage some pride and pull things together, but thereās really no reason to expect it at this point.
If your signature appears at the bottom of the contract extension, clean out your office. Goodbye.
Somebody start a petition. We need to all sign it with our real names and 49er club ranking.
Yes
I have been a (2) season tix holder for about 10 years now.I actually debated getting this years but hung in despite my longstanding concerns re: our coach.Sadly,I stopped coming as of these last 2 games.I never thought it would be so painful to watch our team and our coach that I would just not come.
4 years into this mess and we are a joke.Every time I listen to Major speak about another loss,I cringe.I donāt know who is better out there, and I know that our A.D. has to feel foolish having just given the coach an extension, but we need to make a change NOWā¦AND AT LEAST SHOW THAT THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLEā¦otherwise our leadership must consider it acceptable.
