Could be attractive job.
Could we play Eckerd College next year? 8) (Since we started with the flash card tonight)
despite everything, this is an attractive job. very good facilities and the coach would not have to start over. he would have talent. he could step in and make the tournament from year one. its not like we have a bunch of courtney williams and antwon colemans out there. we have got to find the money to offer someone good.
meh, our facilities aren’t anything special. When Halton was built, sure. We were in a good spot for a program with limited success up to that point, but in today’s world, Halton is pretty average.
We will lose players, it is inevitable unless we find the perfect guy who somehow successfully sells his program to every returning player, it won’t happen. There are probably guys planning on transferring anyway (it happens every year).
What we have going for us most is a history. We’ve done things within the past 20 years that most teams on our level would love to have in their record books. You can win here, that is a huge selling point. Now, I have zero confidence Judy can hire the right guy, but we, in theory, should be able to sell the program just fine, it’s the salary and working for Judy/CHP that is a tougher sell.
I don’t normally post on here, but after tonight lost to Marshall, I have to vent. Major is a joke, and needs to go. Judy need to go. Basketball has hit rock bottom. If we didn’t have football, I would stop my donation to the school.
It’s not going to compete with BCS schools, but the practice facility is nice and I’m guessing better than most schools in one-bid conferences. The biggest thing is that our aim has changed drastically, we are in a crap conference where our arena is bigger and newer than almost all other schools we play against. We aren’t competing with Cincy, Louisville or Memphis anymore. We never were for coaches, but that’s even more true now, we are going to be attractive because our facilities are a step up from almost every team we are competing against, that means huge potential for conference titles and NCAA bids which is what our next coach needs to springboard to a bigger job.

In CUSA, I think we are behind:
UTEP
ODU
UNT
UAB
MT
WKU
But yeah, we’re clearly near the top for facilities : . Most of the arenas above have similar capacities (or larger) and have suites. Half of our seating is slide out bleachers and we have a shitty looking grey track running through the middle of the arena…and white painted cinderblock walls.
Halton isn’t bad, but it is nothing special.
I would take a 1/2 day and drive up from Atlanta… just to see someone start that chant.
Obsessive reader, scant poster. I’m a 2002 grad, and I admit I think I wore a UNC hat around campus my freshman year. Young, naive, and and brought up (by friends) as a “Carolina” lover, I knew no better. After attending a few Halton (which was brand new) basketball games, I was hooked. It was so much fun feeling relevant those years. I realize now how big that actually was, and I’m pumped at the beginning of every single Niner bball season. The past 8-9 years have been such an underwhelming disheartening mess. The empathy is all but drained this year. I loved Lutz, thought he was a stand up guy that was fired up about the program. I also hated losing and not going to the tourney for multiple years in a row, and understood, albeit glum, when he was let go. I gave my best to want Major to be “the guy” but I just think it’s time to cut our losses. It’s hard saying that seeing he’s had some success year over year, but for some reason I’m still not buying it. Don’t get me wrong, seems like a nice guy and I wish him the absolute best, but just don’t think he’s the answer to the Niner program. I’m finally in the Fire Major boat.

Are you really to pay money to see someone start the chant?
clt says facilities are not our problem.

I think I have $4 in my jeans right now… does that count?
clt says facilities are not our problem.
Never said they were. Was just pointing out to niners55 that they’re nothing special. If we’re going to turn things around, we’re going to do it because we hired a good coach, not because of our facilities.

Why’d you have to use facts to back up your argument? It’s easier to make baseless claims!
Seriously though, not having suites hurt, but very few arenas in CUSA have larger capacities than Halton (UTEP and MT from your list) and most of them were built in the 70s. Having not been to all 15 opposing arenas I can’t say, but I imagine being 20 years newer has some benefit. Sure, we’re not far and away better than the rest of the conference in facilities, but are we really behind UTEP because their 40 year old arena seats 2K more? I mean, this is not what a nice arena looks like, it’s a super-sized gym without a center score/video board.
I was wrong to say we had a leg up on the conference in facilities, but I think we’re in the top few (our practice facility was fairly nice compared to the CUSA facilities 10 years ago, I have to assume it has held up reasonably well compared to the current CUSA).
And yes, facilities aren’t our problem, but given our current situation of being a CUSA member in 2014, they are a selling point compared to most of the rest of our conference. This was the only point I was trying to make, we can’t sell them vs. the rest of the country, but vs. the rest of CUSA I think it’s a stretch to say we are just average in terms of facilities.
The biggest issue with Halton is no one is there.
Thought the hire of Major was the right thing to do. A good asst. coach from great basketball program. However, it is not working out. We gave him time to do something and it hasn’t happened. Time to move on. If he is not fired, it will be hard to get excited about next year.
Judy’s comments in the Sorenson article do not give me hope though. Sigh.
I bet all those arenas have a real team store

I am not implying that I know anything, because I don’t, but all she can possibly do right now is say Major has her support. This has been said here tonight a zillion times. In addition to the damage to the program it would do to suggest otherwise mid-season, the pool of coaching candidates would shrink considerably if they thought she would hang them out to dry like that.

Hadn’t thought about it like this… but, I agree 100% on your assessment.
