…I’m assuming CUSA will be adopting as P5 have. Early claims I’ve seen is that hitters will have a definate advantage over pitchers. Will be interesting to see how this plays out - the NCAA is trying to get a LOT more scoring.
I talked with a guy whose son plays college baseball about this one. He has been told that it is now harder to throw offspeed pitches that break since the seams are not helping the ball break. He is going to favor fastball pitches again instead of the control pitchers. They are trying to offset the changes in the bats that they made a few years ago when the ball was coming off the aluminum bats at such a high speed that was injuring pitchers and infielders.
College baseball will be a much more offensive game this year. Pitching is not going to be as good, and they really are flying off the bats in preseason. Should be exciting.
clt asks how will this impact fielding the ball. Less spin on grounders?
I would normally wonder if they went overboard with this change, but considering the state and makeup of this year’s team, it could be what we needed.
N1NER wants to know if clt is going to come out and tailgate for some baseball games this year? N1NER has a ticket for anytime clt wants to come. N1NER says clt’s Cubs will stink again!

Why are they changing the baseball?
The Niners started using the new ball in the fall. I noticed several more HRs than in the past years from what I saw during the scrimmage and the G/W series. The ball seems to carry more. A couple HRs I saw this fall, I thought were easy fly balls off the bat, but they left the yard.
The lower seams on the ball take away some of the impact of the breaking pitches, benefiting the hitters.
They deadened the bats a few years ago in the name of player’s safety. Offensive numbers have gone down significantly over those years so they looked into ways to offset the dead bats. The lowered seams ball carries further and makes it harder for the pitchers to throw breaking balls. It is supposed to be the same balls that they use in the minor leagues, which they probably should have been using anyways.

The issue has really come to the forefront with the opening of TD Ameritrade ballpark in Omaha (new location of the CWS). The park was designed and construction had begun before the new bats were implemented. Since the new park has opened, it has been hard to watch the CWS. Large leads are all but impossible to erase and the game has become extremely lethargic. Balls that are crushed to center field were nothing but routine fly balls. I’m excited for what the new balls will bring to college baseball!

You are 100% right… Every CWS game is seemingly a 2-1 pitchers duel… Don’t need the old school 18-12 games, but 6-4 game is good to mix in.

I am not much of a baseball fan but I am all over this - both the game and the Belfast pre-game.
If it makes the game more like the pro game, I’m all for it.

Thanks for the info. I’m a purist and wish they’d just use wooden bats; however, I understand the cost implications of that.

Personally, if it causes more emphasis on power pitching and less on finesse, it takes away from the game. More throwing, less pitching. More muscle, less skill.
