Like I said didn't really want to open this can of worms but I guess it already has been opened.One of the issues I have is the sign at the entrances of the campus that says “Firearms are prohibited on campus” or something of that nature. If I was looking to rob someone and was packing, I’d think, great no one else has a gun I can go knock on anyones door and rob them and don’t have to worry about them having a gun to protect themselves. Like someone said earlier the people that are doing the robbing aren’t charlotte students, so why do we have to advertise that people can’t protect themselves on campus?
The second issue I have is with the campus edge safety, I lived there in 2004 and their were people getting robbed then also, its a bad place to be in because the campus police can’t do anything, I don’t understand why they don’t have more real charlotte police at those apartments with the history of the thefts at that complex.
If you’re a student on campus, don’t carry anything with you other than the essentials. Don’t bother with carrying your wallet, you only need your 49er card on campus. You’d be a lot less inclined to defend yourself if all you had to defend was a 49er card and some books. Girls can protect themselves from physical violence by traveling in packs and using the police escort service.
Plus, I’d rather exchange 20 people getting mugged w/o physical injury than have one shooting fatality over a cheating girlfriend.
The idea that the campus police can’t go to Campus Edge is ridiculous. They have jurisdiction between 1-3 miles around campus and are CMPD officers. If there’s an emergency that they’re needed for, or for basic patrol, there’s nothing stopping them. The problem is that most of them are busy on campus catching speeders or talking to one another in back parking lots.
Once again, I reiterate, the campus police are REAL CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG POLICE OFFICERS. Sorry, I just hate that misconception.
And maybe it would help if they didn’t open the door for people they don’t know! If there’s a shady looking fellow outside your door, ask him what he wants and how he knows you before opening the door!
