Recruits aren’t stupid and they know which teams have a shot at playing for the national championship. There is more to playing a sport than just winning a national championship. If a kids signs with any team other than a handful of elite P5 teams I think deep down inside they know they aren’t going to be playing for the national championship.
If all we have to play for is a G5 championship I have zero interest, nor do I think we should, play any of those better teams in nonconference games. They would just be perceived as charity to me. There would be no purpose to them.
At the end of this season would you rather see Cincinnati play Coastal Carolina instead of Florida or Georgia? If Cincinnati or Coastal play a P5 I’m more likely to watch routing for them to beat up on the P5.
Ohio State is 4th in the CFP rankings and they played 5 games with only 2 against ranked teams. Cincinnati is 8-0 and has 2 wins against ranked opponents. They are 8th in the CFP rankings. Totally ridiculous.
Yup and if Michigan St had Ohio St’s resume they’d probably be @ 10th. I hope when they re-do the CFP the committee is gone and we go back to the BCS ratings
Read an espn article about this. He was spot on, and I’m glad he spoke up. Its complete bullshit. It’s time we get away from this P5 crap the media has pushed and make it equal. It wouldn’t be hard at all to fix, but greed will never let it happen.
Now that’s an interesting idea. Have a new playoff that includes the top 8 to 12 teams in the country that are not selected for the CFP. Include P5 & G5 schools & do it fairly without bias. That would create a lot of interest & draw a lot of spectators. With the P5’s included it could also generate a lot of television revenue. Something like this could show the CFP where they are going wrong and if it’s successful could eventually just replace it & include all of the top teams.
And I absolutely agree that the current system is never going to change because it’s not in the best interest of those with all of the power & money. They are not going to help out the G5 out of the goodness of their hearts. The G5 needs to do something different to survive & to try to take control of their own fate.
That SI article is perfect, there needs to be more like that.
“Our postseason is as bad as there is,” Herbstreit said during an appearance on Keyshawn, JWill & Zubin Wednesday, according to 247 Sports. “And we have got to figure out a system that opens up opportunities.
“The season ends Jan. 12, I can already tell you 2021 Ohio State’s coming out of the Big Ten, Clemson’s coming out of the ACC, Alabama’s coming out of the SEC. I can say in 2023, Ohio State is coming out of the Big Ten, Clemson’s coming out of the ACC and Alabama.”
Holy crap. Gameday guys finally seeing what we have known for years???
The CFP is a business with ESPN paying the bills. It’s in the CFP’s interest to maximize revenue for ESPN, that’s why it’s not a merit system (even though everyone pretends it is). The G5 is doing pretty good to get 27% now. If the G5 went off and had their own playoff, would they find someone to pay them +$80M, which is what they get now? The G5 is eventually going to have to do their own thing, for the required revenue to break even will soon demand a P5 only CFP.

Plus this gem per Ross Dellenger:
From the CFP selections to the NY6 bowl pairings, I've never seen the college football system exposed like this. Just shitting on the little guys, including some who have wins or transitive wins over the big guys.

As an SEC AD texted me today, "Something's got to change."
The problem is that it’s a TV show. No G5 will ever get in based on that fact. ESPN is implicit in the whole thing. Rece Davis tossing softballs to Barta today.
I think TV ratings likely tank this year. That may be the only way it changes. If it doesn’t change, G5 should do their own thing.
Expansion may help but they will handicap the non P5 with bad seedings.
It was a farce this year.
Dan Wetzel chimes in:
The SEC is irate, things happen when they get mad. The name on the jersey bias is stunningly obvious this year with the committee.
Playoff should expand from 4 to 8, initially
