Gammons on Maine

per espn chat w/ peter gammons

Jason (Columbia, MD): When does John Maine come to the rescue of the Orioles’ rotation? Can Ray Miller get the pitching staff back to a respectable level before season’s end, and do the Birds have a real shot at competing next season?

Peter Gammons: It would be a stretch to hope that Maine can help them this year but I still believe that with Maine, Cabrera and Bedard they have the makings for next year. They also have to see if Ponson can be bothered to become a decent starting pitcher.

His line from his last game:

J Maine (W,3-5) IP: 6 H:5 R:0 ER:0 BB:2 K:10 HR:0

That’s more like it. I couldn’t figure out how to make it look all pretty and stuff, but then again, I’m not all pretty and stuff.

Wow, very impressive. Just needs to show he can do that consistantly for at least a month or two and he should have his invite up to the bigs by the roster expansion date(at least).

He lowered his ERA almost a half a point with that outing. He’s got it back under 5.00 now. I’d like to see him get it under 4.00 before the end of the year. His K amount is really good. If he cuts down on the walks a little, he’ll start putting up some numbers like his last outing every time out.

Maine stats:

Pitchers W-L ERA G GS CG GF SH SV IP H R ER HR BB SO WP

J.Maine 3-5 4.99 11 11 0 0 0 0 57.2 59 35 32 9 28 53 0

The future looks bright with the 3 young guys.

Ponson seems too fat and happy being a knight or whatever the he!! he is in Aruba to actually care about getting shelled each and every time out.

If the O’s had kept the pitchers they’ve had over the years their starting rotation would be:

Schilling, K. Brown, Mussina, Moyer, D. Wells

Maine pitched Monday night and got the no-decision.

J Maine IP:6 H:4 R:1 ER:1 BB:0 K:6 HR:0

I think he’s adjusting to AAA quite nicely now.

Maine had another great outing in a no-decision Thursday night. 6 innings of work, 6 Ks, 3 BBs, 1 ER. Left the game with the lead, but the pen blew it.

Might not be such a stretch for Maine to help the O’s this year Gammons. With Baltimore in the basement, it might be worth their while to bring him up before 40 man roster time. Even though he struggled at first, his adjustment and recent string of good outings says more to me.

Metro you were off in your prediction of the all-star break, but not that far off I think.
