I've never hated on Phil Jones. He is a freshman, and plays like a freshman. He is being put into a situation that is not ideal. So far Big Phil hasnāt impressed me. He had better start doing some things to help this team win or his minutes will probaly shrink. A crunch time front line of Cooley, Mack and Wilderness is sounding pretty good to me right now.It is a lose/lose situation. If he doesnāt play, he doesnāt get experience that he needs. When he is in, instead of our 3 forward rotation, we struggle a little more.
I think he will develop into a good player.

That lineup is just too small against some teams. Phil needs timeā¦He is a gazillion times better than Iti. Donāt make some of us pull out his game tapeā¦
free throws and not being able to finish around the basket is what killed us. and phil actually needs to play the game and not just stand there. i thought we were a better team then GT and we will do really well in the rest of this tourny.
That lineup is just too small against some teams. Phil needs time...He is a gazillion times better than Iti. Don't make some of us pull out his game tape...That lineup will be fine against most teams. Phil isn't scoring, rebounding or blocking shots. Minter abused him in the App game. Big Phil has an NBA body but needs some serious work. Plus, Lutz likes to push the ball up the floor. Most teams seem to play that fast pace style these days. You don't need a true center if you're going to play that way on both ends of the floor. I'm not saying we should play that way but we do play that way.
What is an Iti?
Iti would have been a serviceable center here by his senior year. But, people expected too much out of him. I hope the same doesnāt happen to Phil.

Iām going to get to see Iti play live on Friday vs. Texas. I canāt wait.
Thatās cool. He looks as dopey as ever.

Phil has played 3 games at a college level so far. Heāll dominate much of the A10 and get a lot better. Ga Tech was far too athletic for him this early in his career. At least we havenāt had a bad loss yet this season. Weāve usually had 2 bad losses by the 4th game of the season.
I donāt think heāll dominate anyone this year. He might get a dominating performance next year, but I donāt really expect him to be dominating until his senior year. If we are lucky, he might be dominating next year. Big men in college are like QBs in the NFL, they take years to develop.
My response is late, I was away from my computer most of the weekend. Based on what I read in the paper and followed on Utters updates, this game was a tough one to lose because we all feel we could have won and had we taken care of business at the line, we would have. Thats been a common story watching many of our teams for sometime. I donāt know if itās with the players we recruit or the teams preperation at the line. I can name several guards over the past 4-5 seasons who have stunk it up at the line.
We shot too many 3ās. This was the first game where I remembered what is frustrating about Lutz ball. I understand the idea, 3 pointers neutralize a team who may be more talented then you, but still frustrating.
We fought till the end and some guys on the team that are new stepped up.
We will certainly get better and hopefully get better at the line and alittle more disciplined. I hope to see us attack the basket more and shoot fewer 3ās (I know we will always shoot a lot of 3ās with Lutz). Smarter fouls by our players, learn what is a good foul and a bad foul. A lot of these errors are youth related, I know.
This team has potential to be good sooner then some of us expected.

Agreed, I would like to see us send him to a big man camp next summer (possibly the Pete Newell Big man Camp), one of these camps that works with centers and power forwards, work on his footwork, positing up. He needs to shoot a lot more in the offseason and work on using the backboard some. He looks like he can develop.

Yep. Cedric Maxwell dominated no one as a soph, but the next 2 years he was deceptively EXCELLENT. Yep. Give big olā Phil a chance to develop. He has potential.

I agree - people are expecting too much out of Phil right now, we have to give this kid time too develop. Heās shown sole good flashes and isnāt near as foul prone as Iti is (plus he makes dunks). By the middle of his soph year to his Jr year he could be a force if we give him time and opportunity. I really hope our fans donāt turn on him like they turned on Iti.

Iām pretty sure it was GT and I realized that after I posed it still Iti was missing 1 a game at least (and I think Coley has missed 2 or 3). Iām just saying IMO heās already an upgrade from Iti and will develop if we can just be patient w him.

I donāt think Maxwell even started at the beginning of his freshman season. Jon Heath started at center most of the time that year.
Also, Tim Duncan did not dominate his first year at Wake.

Not sure freshmen were allowed to play varsity back then. When were freshmen allowed to play varsity? EDIT: Yep they were, beginning 71-72 season.
