I caught the 1st half of the game on FullCourt. If we have an off night against Richmond, we will lose. Even with a good night, they aren’t a team that we will beat easily. They have several 3-point shooters, and they spread you out and use most of the shot clock. Unlike SLU, they don’t continuously run you off of high-post picks, but rather they spread the floor in the half-court set looking for an open lay-up until they’re forced to take a lower percentage shot. If you lay off of them, they have what they want, a lower-scoring, slower game. Dean got hot in the second half from three and put UL over the top. Louisville tried to press Richmond, but the trap was not very effective. What seemed to work best was full court straight man, keeping somebody all over the ball handler. The trap doesn’t work against them because they have 4 guys on the floor who can reasonably handle the ball, but none of them are great at it. It’s good for beating a trapping press, but you can force some turnovers if you hawk them. They used a forward to bring the ball up the court, much like we have used Curt against Cincy before. Hopefully the players know better what to expect from a team like this after having played Northwestern.
