exchanged emails with Mr Balicki who authored the golf article:
Mr. Balicki,
Greetings! I am a current Charlotte student and avid golf fan. I am also the Secretary for Athletic Affairs in the Student Government Association at Charlotte. I wanted to sincerely thank you for your great article on our golf team. As silly as it may sound, I also wanted to thank you for properly using our Athletic Department name, “Charlotte.” Too often, sports writers address us as UNC Charlotte, UNC-Charlotte, UNCC, NC-Charlotte, etc etc (the list goes on and on) when we would simply prefer “Charlotte.” Your article was well researched, well written, and it made my day to see my school in national print. Our own “local” media outlet, the Charlotte Observer, chooses to cover us as minimally as possible, instead opting to cover mostly ACC and SEC schools that are hundreds of miles away. So, when Charlotte students and alumni see our University that we love so dearly in the news (and named properly!) it really makes us have hope that someday we will get the media coverage we deserve.
Thank you very, very much!
Job Fickett

Job,
Thanks for your note. I’ll be following the 49ers in the regionals and would love to continue writing about them. They could be college golf’s Cinderella story of the year if they can advance to nationals. Take care
Ron
I would encourage you all to send him a note as well. Really knows about and seems to care about our program. Why is it so hard for the observer to just bite the bullet and cover us? NATIONAL MAGAZINE WRITERS CAN DO IT!!!
Mr. Balicki isn’t from here so he hasn’t been indoctrinated to ignore us.
I’m sure Mr. Persinger will have a discussion with him at the next media conference.
OK, I have been a reader of this website for years and years. I have had several names on here to login, though rarely have posted, for various reasons. I graduated many moons ago, and have season tickets. I just have to say, when people from our school write publications, whether online or print, grammar should be perfect. I do not know how to do the quotes on here yet, but there should not have been a comma, in the letter to Mr. Balicki, after too often. In addition, The Charlotte Observer should either be underlined or italicized, if you can’t underline. I was a history major, and in sales, so not a teacher. However, when we reach out to national media, if Mr. Balicki can be considered so, proper grammar, and all that goes with it, will give us a little more credibility. Jfickett, you are a good man for being active in our great school, and we need more men like you to make us better, and thank you for taking the time to reach out to others, and let them know what we are doing! Thanks, and not trying to be anything other than help!

Nice grammar…

You are so right, and thank you for correcting me! I guess spending 8 hours at Quail Hollow today screwed up my ability to back up what I said earlier! I was just trying to make a point, and not slam anyone at all. I can man up to my mistakes, and I know we all can! Semper Fi!

that might be the most accurate post in NNN histroy
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been 1000 miles away on work and I get into a discussion and I tell them where I went to school and they say “you guys had a great hoops team a couple years go”

During our CUSA days (2000 I believe), I was sitting at a blackjack table in South Tahoe discussing the Niners with grads of DePaul and Marquette. A “tarhole fan” joined the table and tried to tell those fans “UNCC” had never been good at basketball. They knew better.
Gotta love the coverage the Golf team is getting. Woot!
yes. our national coverage has been much better than our local coverage for the past 3 years.

Totally agree! Hope you keep posting!
Nice work on the letter, Job. I’m not sure how to feel tho, why would he call us a Cinderella story? It’s not like we’re coming out of no where. Maybe an idiot’s Cinderella story?

“First, Charlotte lost three seniors to graduation. Then, midway through the season, it lost its coach when Jamie Green left to take over at Duke. And for the most part, the 49ers also lost on the golf course.”
hey guys, i know this is absolutely random, but since charlotte golf is the subject, i figured this would be an appropriate question…
does anyone know where i can find a lightweight-standing charlotte golf bag? jfickett gave me the idea of emailing the golf coach to see if he could order me one, and i did 2 days ago and haven’t gotten a response. i’ve tried looking all over online and haven’t found a thing. if anyone comes across anything, please let me know. i’m in dyer need of a new golf bag…

Ah ok. I think I'm being too literal with how I see "a Cinderella story."
