Here are some principles that guide VMI’s high-scoring offense:
SHOOT BEFORE YOU TURN IT OVER. Coach Duggar Baucom actually shouts this at his players. He wants them to take the first open shot.
PITCH IT AHEAD. Better to overthrow a fast-break pass out of bounds than underthrow and have the opponent intercept and counterattack.
SPRINT TO THE RIM. Like North Carolina, VMI has a post player run straight down the floor. If he doesn’t get the ball in the post, he fades out to a short corner.
FIVE OUT. All five players are spaced out around the 3-point arc. Then the offense initiates with a drive, dribble handoff, back cut or jump shot.
BE AGGRESSIVE. Dribble off your foot while standing still and Baucom will go crazy. Dribbling off your foot while attacking the basket is OK, though.
Not anymore than any other school.
VMI is like the Citadel, they play military since before the Civil War. They don’t have anymore Rotc than any other school not named Army, Navy, or Air Force.
Reggie Williams is a prolific scorer and one of the great players to ever attend VMI. He almost willed the keydets to a NCAA Tournament birth last year.
