Great article by Langston Wertz on Charlotte's recruiting

well worth the read: http://obsprepspot.blogspot.com/2013/08/suddenly-charlotte-49ers-starting-to.html

Hopefully the trend continues.

Good read. We have had lots of good players from the Charlotte area in the past, but not this many at one time.

Who were Woods 36 offers? Rivals has him with like 3.

Solid article. Some of the comments reek of Metro.

Beautiful piece! I love the optimism!

Anyone that doesn’t follow the program wouldn’t call out specific players. They’d just shit on the program as a whole.

I was a little concerned that football would take away some of our recruiting prowess by pushing basketball out of the “big man on campus spot”. Look at South Carolina for instance, they throw millions of dollars at their bball program and coach and have a consistently miserable team. Being a “football school” has absolutely hurt their basketball.

I’m thinking we are going to have a different experience though. Football is going to give us so much new publicity that Charlotte is going to be more top of mind and our overall legitimacy as a sports school is going to increase. I’m not sure if we are seeing the effect of that yet with basketball recruiting but I guarantee we will with the next two classes.

It must really suck being miserable all the time.

I think part of it is they have never historically been a strong basketball program. Also, basketball recruiting is shit in SC, where football is much stronger.

He’s miserable and F’ing SICK.

A long time ago, I met the father of Langston Wertz. He was a really nice guy and seemed like a good person. He was also very proud of his son, which is deserving. I am glad Mr. Wertz is throwing us a bone. Maybe he is finally disgusted enough with that other school, that he can now see the positives that Charlotte is offering.

In hindsight, the vision of Woodward went very well with the (forced) Football vision of the current administration. I know our basketball program would have been better off if we started football earlier. I am not sure that our football program would have been better-off. Having the campus in its current condition compared to then, and building the stadium how and where it is, it is as near-perfection as a start-up can have. Add getting a guy like Lambert (vs Amato…laughter), has been a God-send. Why wouldn’t it help out with the basketball program? I am not going to complain if our basketball team is the best of an average league. I like winning

I knew his mom professionally, never have met him though. She was smart, nice, and a savvy lady. Great sense of humor too.

Nah… Look, football is a huge deal to everyone now and absolutely trumps basketball. However, 2-3 years down the road we’ll simply have 2 major sports to get up for, 1 fall and 1 winter/spring. While I’m not trying to depress any of our optimism, hope, and momentum, we really need to be realistic here. We don’t have any history and will not be fighting for national championships in the next 10 years. There’s no way we become a “football school” unless our basketball program falls into complete dismay (bad enough to destroy our history) and our football program wins 2-3 conference championships and/or bowl games in a row. Until then, we’ll be a historical basketball school with an awesome new football program that everyone is, and will likely remain excited about for some time.
