greatest heavy metal bands of all-time

Here is my list. It's not real contemporary. Not to say there isn't room for the newer stuff. These are all classics.

Sepultura

Pantera

Anthrax

Iron Maiden (Greatest metal singer of all-time is Bruce Dickinson?)

Motorhead

Judas Priest

Hard to beat Sepultura, at least before they lost Cavalera and went all conventional. He’s now fronting Soulfly, also good stuff but closer to those rap/metal groups.

Does Living Colour count as heavy metal? They had some awesome metal-like songs.

Cradle of Filth, Slayer, Napalm Death, and Carcass should probably be up there somewhere, though the latter 2 I’ve never liked all that much.

I’d recommend some Scandinavian metal: Arch Enemy, Dimmu Borgir, and the Haunted (former members of At the Gates, who put out one really great album), though these groups haven’t been on the American scene as long.

'Tallica hands down is the best metal band EVA!

The Deftones are NOT metal. Period. While I like them, that’s not metal. I’m not even sure Tool falls solely into the “metal” category. Heavy, yes. Metal? Debatable.
I also included The Who and Anthrax. Anthrax are thrash (as are Metallica) which is not heavy metal, but thrash metal.

If you’re going straight up heavy metal, then it is Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath. Deep Purple is okay, but not really my thing. Those four are the best heavy metal bands still today.

does anyone like Between the Buried and Me? good friend of mine is the guitarist. they’re a North Carolina band. represent.

Here are some I did not see mentioned.

Robin Trower
Iron Butterfly
Uriah Heep
Van Halen
Deep Purple
Aerosmith
Hendrix
AC/DC
The Who (mentioned by Powerbait, but deserves another mention)
Kiss (in earlier days… now, they are just a big gimmick)
Jefferson Airplane (in early days of band)

I’ll add others later.

I think everyone below the age of 30 should be excluded from this discussion. You know nothing of Heavy Metal!

Oooh, Van Halen. Forgot them.

I'm sure I've suffered hearing damage from my younger years. I'm from the generation when heavy metal began (but you knew that :shades:). Many of you mentioned Black Sabbath. I have their first album from the early 70's.

Anyway… I’ve crashed the discussion anyway.

Arch Enemy is freaking awesome and by the way has a freaking female lead singer who is way better than most of the males. How about Nightwish?

Yeah, Arch Enemy is good stuff.

If you like that black Scandinavian stuff, you can’t leave out Emperor.

Also, kudos PB for bringing up Deep Purple. I can’t believe that one escaped me … metal pioneers, man (along with Sabbath and the others of course).

I thought I first mentioned Deep Purple. Did Powerbait beat me to it? :shades:

Emperor is one of the more popular bands out of there, but for some reason I’ve never gotten into them, most of their songs sound very similar to me.

I'm not familiar with Nightwish, are they metal?

Got to see Arch Enemy outside Chicago a few years back. Unfortunately the sound system at the club was one of the worst I’ve ever heard, and the singer complained about it mid-set. She was pretty good, though it’s a little jarring to hear those evil sounds coming out of such an angelic woman.
(e.g. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubHOHi9Bzug&feature=related , working folk, watch out for bad language…)
The guitarists were awesome as always.
Two of my favorites: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMGpcjzb67Q

And one with the old singer:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkuL8Nl8E1c&feature=related (sound quality isn’t great, need to turn it up)
Metallica is overrated crap. I hate that band.
We’re talking pre “And Justice for All”. At least that is the Metallica I listened to. Kill 'EM All, Ride the Lightning, MofP, etc. were some great albums.

Has anyone seen the RnR show on the UNCC channel? Channel 21 or 22 on TWC? I ran across this the other night and they were showing music videos from bands such as Slipknot and Halloween. A bit to heavy for my tastes but seeing rock videos on the UNCC channel was quite the surprise.
The godfathers of punk and metal - The Who.
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Anthrax
Deftones
Antrax. Now that brought back a memory…

Quality stuff right there I tell ya!

How are “The Who” metal?
Metal is more influenced by Classical composers more than 70’s british rock. Judas Priest is the way to go if you are citing british rock.

Must be a megadeth fan…
I love the Deftones and with the Deftones I’d have to add Tool as well.
Tool are incredible, Maynard can lay down some insane lyrics, and Carey owns the drums, but they are a progressive/ art band.
Aerosmith
Hendrix
Jefferson Airplane (in early days of band)

I also heard Elvis was metal as hell!!!

“…And Justice for All” wasn’t bad, but my favorite album by far has to be “Ride the Lightning”

While the Beatles are always labelled the most influential rock band of all time, there is no doubt that if you listen to anything close to rock and roll, it’s gonna be heavily influenced by the Who. Heavy Metal included. They laid the groundwork that bands like Sabbath and Zeppelin picked up and turned into heavy metal.

I listed my favorite proto-metal, heavy metal and metal influenced bands. It is about as tired an argument as “what is punk rock?,” but I chose to use a more encompassing definition of the greatest heavy metal band, especially since something like this is wholly subjective.

Thrash metal has become the standard bearer for heavy metal, much like hardcore punk has become the standard definition for punk rock. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that most of the people concered with genres are younger (as is almost always the case) and they grew up with bands like Metallica or DK being the direct influence for a lot of bands they listen to, so now we’re forced to have early heavy metal bands relegated to “hard rock” and early punk rock bands to “pop punk.” Revisionist history at its finest.

As for the rest of your post, Metallica was mediocre at their best and garbage at their worst. Anthrax will always be the kings of thrash.

I agree but most Metallica bashers pull out that album as that album produced the first video and thus the “sellout” rants. I agree with Ride the Lightning with Master of Puppets a close second.

1 Matster of Puppets
1.a And Justice for All
1.a.1 Ride the lightning
2. Kill em All
2.a Garage Days

They could put out Yanni music for the next 10 years and those 5 albums would still make them one of best ever
