I hate Duke with a passion. That being said, there is no comparrison between the two.

I grew up in Durham and have been fortunate enough to have had some great seats for some great games at Duke when I was junior high and high school (late 80’s / early 90’s). I sat one row behind LSU’s bench in the bleachers during Shaq’s junior year when the played at Cameron (Chris Webber was in attendance as a recruit). I caught the Googs, Monroe, Corchiani State team play there as well as many others. Flatly put, there is no better place to watch a basketball game in the U.S. - college or pro.
The place gets hot as hell (at least it used to), the students are right on top of the action, and most importantly - the students are all synchronized. They PRACTICE their chants and tailor them for each opponent. Whenever a player dribbles the ball all you hear is “Boink, boink, boink, boink” from the crowd. A pass is greeted with “PASS” and so on. When Chris Washburn at NCSU got caught stealing stereo equipment, they threw headphones on the court when he was introduced. Many in the student body used to dress up like Frankenstein to mock Eric Montross. Duke’s student body at basketball games is the equivalent of the Stanford band for football games as far as mocking people. For crying out loud, the pep band plays “What would Brian Boitano Do?” and “UncleFuc#er” as standards. If you ever get a chance, go see a game there. Tickets aren’t as difficult to get as you may have been led to believe.
I’ve been to every Cincy game except for the infamous Fortson Ice Brawl, and Halton can get every bit as loud as Cameron, but our student body doesn’t have the cleverness or synchronicity of the Cameron Crazies. That said, Halton is a great place to watch a game. I just wish more fans came out to support the program.

Go Niners! Flatten the Bearcats!

Hands down, the Crazies are better. They show no compassion - for anyone! Went to see the Niners play at Duke with Jarvis Lang and they beat up on little ol’ Charlotte. Heck they may have even ridiculed Coach Mullins, Candy, Kelly and their dogs, Niner and Nugget. They simply do not care!!!

Creativity is the name of the game… and they certainly have it. The best our students can come up with is “BUUULLLLLSHIT!” - and they can only sustain that for about 6 repeats before everyone gets out of synch. Ever heard our students clap in unison for more than about 10 claps? Heaven forbid if the tempo on the clapping speeds up - everyone is screwed then!!

I recall one time when we played ODU at the Coliseum and they had this kid with the last name of Cox. Well, we started chanting at him - in not so many words - that he was not a particularly good player. (PM me if you want the real text.) Should have seen the astonishment on the alumni faces around us… Even Judy came up after the game and thanked us for our “enthusiasm, but let’s try for a little less shock factor next time.” So, next time when we played South Florida or somebody, they had this kid that looked like Eddie Munster… so we started humming/chanting the tune to “The Munsters” or chanting “Eddie Munster, Eddie Munster” everytime he touched the ball… as they were walking off the court, he stopped by our section and congratulated us for a job well done… no kidding!

Use a little imagination… keep it up for all the games… get several people in unison, and eventually most everyone will catch on. Next game, everyone will know how to follow.

4 big differences:

  1. The seats are closer to the court at Cameron than anywhere in the country.

  2. Only students fill the lower level and completely surround the court.

  3. No individual seats for students, bleachers, so they can really pack them in.

  4. No track separating one section of seating from the other.

NICE POST DUDE

Cameron is better. Halton can only be compared when we play Cincy and once in awhile (L’ville last year for instance) another game comes close. As the earlier post stated, just looking at the Cincy game alone you have to give it to the Cameron Crazies for their creativity. I’ve never seen any other school duplicate the synchronized chants, actions, etc. that you find at Cameron.

The three arenas that I’ve been to that top Halton are:

Cameron (saw both games against Charlotte in the early 90’s)
Reynolds (watched Fire & Ice smack the Heels in their last game against them)
Freedom Hall

We still have better fans than:

NC State in the new arena
South Carolina (although I haven’t been to the new arena)
Wake until the last 2 years
and definitely better than the Wine & Cheese Dome at Chapel Hill College (1,000 Niners fans were louder than 15k Tarheel fans a few years back)

I love being in Halton for Cincy because it’s the one game we can count on the students coming out for. We have the potential to have great home crowds consistantly when our students learn that being on ESPN isn’t the only reason to attend a game (sorry for the rant).

Point is Cameron is way ahead of Halton for a fan stand point.
