How does this happen?

I was on the road in north Charlotte/Concord today for 30 minutes and saw prices range from $3.69 to $4.27 for 87 octane.

The Oil Companies are playing the American consumers as suckers.

Ever since Katrina, they feel justified in creating a gasoline supply scare and the problem is Katrina was not the 1st storm to ever threaten the Gulf.

How did we all survive before Katrina? If our country had some leadership, issues like this could be prevented.

Our country is the bitch of the oil industry.

Btw scotty, I just passed that station and they are at 3.91 for regular now. (3:00)

to expand on the refineries it was first noted that we haven’t built one in 30 years. Beyond that oil companies complain that they have to invest so much money in research and upkeep yet i have had family members and friends who have worked for shell, texaco, etc. and they tell me that most of the refineries are very sub-standard. These guys don’t spend a god-d*** dime they don’t have to, I guess they are acting on the fact that oil won’t last forever, grab the cash NOW! and oh BTW, things are hotter than ever with Chavez and Venezuela, he kicked our ambassador out and we kicked theirs out and hes stating he will not have diplomatic relations with us until bush is out of office. They are our 4th largest supplier but we are their number one customer. A cutoff will hurt both of us however if it did happen, 5, 6 dollar gas, here we come.

take the bus? I take the metro everyday when it’s not raining.

If I went to and left work the same time everyday, riding PART (the public transportation here) might be an option. It’s $2/day currently. A pretty good deal considering the current price of gas. My job is not a certain time-certain time job, though, and never will be.

In Brazil, the oil companies don’t overcharge, & actually make alternatives like sugar cane ethanol. In Brazil, the politicians demand you do what’s best for the country.
But the 2 party-system in America is bought off, so we get f*cked up the a55 here.

If I am correct, Brazil keeps drilling. And they also have much more favorable conditions to grow sugar cane for ethanol than here. Sugar cane is much more efficient to make ethanol than corn to my knowledge.

And our 2-party paid-off system won’t let us import sugar-cane ethanol without tariffes because they both run the 1st Pres. Primary in Iowa corn ethanol land.

I had a Brazilian Exchange Student in high school (2000) and they were already paying $3.50/gallon. We were paying $1.50 back then…

If we had to pay to import it it wouldn't be efficient enough as of now. That's not the solution for the US. Just drillling now... maybe some kind of alternative eventually
because we haven’t built a refinery in 30 years
Wouldn’t hurt much to build a few more outside of the hurricane zone, and how about some nuclear energy plants too, before that bites our collective asses too!

Looks like we Californians are sitting pretty for once about gas. Filled up in San Jose, CA for $3.89 on my way home today. Who would have thought?

California has to refine its own fuel b/c there are “special” chemicals for the fuel and rules for transportation.

Gil, actually the distributors tell the stations what to charge.

Believe it or not, most stations will charge as little as possible for the reason you said - to get you in the door to by coffee and $1.00 candybars.

you meant wholesaler, the station is the distributor

and I disagree, stations charge wtf they want, my uncle just sold his gas station for about 500k. He was happy if he got .10 per gallon profit

I was on empty and pumped 10 gallons into my 27 gallon tank

then I see douche-freaking-bags filling up and buying extra tanks of gas!!! IDIOTS, thats why you get shortages

If there is a natural disaster, get a few gallons and chill until the supply chain gets goin again
OK, so I’m driving down N Tryon to go to work this morning. I see a gas station with gas at $3.89. I go no more than 100 yards further down the road and there is a station with gas at $3.59. How the hell can two gas stations less than a quarter of a mile apart be 30 cents a gallon different???

I was just wondering if anyone knew how or why this happens.
Have you ever looked at the price difference of, say, a stereo from Tweeter vs. Best Buy?

and oh BTW, things are hotter than ever with Chavez and Venezuela, he kicked our ambassador out and we kicked theirs out and hes stating he will not have diplomatic relations with us until bush is out of office. Chavez will do -nothing-

Nothing.

He desperately needs expensive oil to fund his socialist projects. Venezuela is the one OPEC nation that always pushes for any measure that keeps prices up. Chavez will not be cutting off oil to this country. I’m not ranting at you, Down, I’m just tired of that fool. He’s a demagogue.

I think I read somewhere that a gallon of gas in VZ is .16 cents…!

Most can’t charge whatever price they want because there is too much competition. As you just said, they don’t make money off of gas. They make their money off of overpriced soft drinks, beer, and groceries because it’s more “convenient” than going to the grocery store.

I meant it is their "choice"

NA said the wholesaler sets their price, which is wrong (according to my uncle)
