Cincinnati actively looking for Huggins' next hire without his involvement is hard to swallow.
My thoughts exactly.
I didn’t think much of this when Andy Katz first reported Cincy was looking at the Northeastern coach to replace Dan Peters. You replace one associate head coach who is a good friend of Huggins with another guy who is a good friend of “DWI” Bob. And, yes, both left head coaching positions to be an assistant coach at Cincy.
I more amused by the “feud” between Doyel and Huggins than anything else. IMO, so what if Huggins told Goins to call his friend in Boston to see if he wants the job? I don’t think anyone anticipated this coming up when Huggs was suspended – and I use that word loosely!
the only way I can see a head coach taking an asst coaching is if he’s not turning a program around and close to be fired. That was peters reason for coming to UC.
Mike DeCourcy gave a good reason why he might be considering the Cincy gig:
Why would Northeastern head coach Ron Everhart consider an approach from Cincinnati to become an assistant under Bob Huggins? One reason: Northeastern’s pending move to the Colonial Athletic Association. Though Northeastern launched (UConn’s John) Calhoun’s career, it has been unable to dominate the America East–one of the lesser Division I leagues. Many coaches familiar with the CAA’s higher level of play believe it will be extremely difficult for the Huskies to avoid slipping toward the bottom of their new conference.

Also, this from Andy Katz:
Everhart considering Cincinnati assistant job
Monday, Aug. 9: Northeastern coach Ron Everhart is in discussions about joining Bob Huggins’ staff at Cincinnati as an assistant to replace Dan Peters. Peters, who was the associate head coach, left Cincinnati for a similar position at Ohio State. Huggins is likely to replace Peters with a close friend, and grabbing a head coach who is a close friend like Everhart would certainly fit. Cincinnati great Oscar Robertson, who is serving as the interim coach during Huggins’ summer-long suspension, isn’t going to stay on the staff. Huggins returns from the suspension on Aug. 27. Everhart has a tough decision if the job is offered. He returns one of the top point guards in the country in Jose Juan Barea (20.7 ppg, 5.8 apg in '04), who is fresh off leading Puerto Rico to the silver medal in the World Championship for Young Men qualifying tournament in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Huskies should factor in the America East race with favorite Vermont. If Everhart decides to leave, then Big East assistants like BC’s Bill Coen, Providence’s Steve DeMeo and UConn’s Tom Moore are likely to pursue the job.

So it doesn’t sound like Everhart is under the gun at Northeastern, at least not this upcoming season. The Huskies were 19-11 last year, so that couldn’t be a problem (and CollegeInsider.com named him American East coach of the year). I also wonder if he’s being groomed to be Huggin’s heir apparent at Cincy. According to his bio page, he’s only 40.
[BTW, he roomed with some guy named Dell Curry during his college days at Virginia Tech.]

I can’t see how a head coach who is “up and coming” would take an asst job.
Most up and coming coaches go from assistant to a low or mid major and work their way up. See Billy Donovan and Mike Brey.
I think UC can get a bigger name and more proven coach. In fact an article a few years ago had a quote from a former player saying Bob Lutz is interested in coaching UC. Huggs has made it clear he’s not coaching much longer.
Iowa State fires Eustachy for pictures of him drinking and hitting on young women yet Huggins gets only a paid suspension for a DWI. Who is more of a threat to society here? Hell, a paid suspension is what I’d like to be on. It’s like I get to take a long vacation and get paid for it and I’m excused from any responsiblity while I’m gone. Exactly what’s the punishment here? Awwww poor Huggy’s pride is hurt? Sounds like they rewarded him for getting a DWI. Geez UC, grow some. As far as the article, Doyell is right on. Of course Huggins is involved with who is going to be his assistant. No way he’s not involved and will undoubtably be the one to make the hire. Fact is there really was no real suspension, it’s just a cover story to make you think he was punished in some way.

For that matter, have a chat with Bobby Lutz. He had accepted the head coaching job at Gardner-Webb, then took an assistant position at Charlotte. It does happen.

No dispute there. If Huggs had just a modest record at UC he would be gone. The fact that he’s winning, they claim he just needs “help”. That Doyell srory is just that. We dont know if everhart contacted UC. Don’t forget Huggs and everhart are friends, sure they talk on the phone and huggs may have brought it up. It’s a non-story.

Ok what is a gardner-webb? I don’t mean coaching an elementary school and taking an asst coach job is a step down. But if you are a head coach of a team that can play in the big dance, I see no reason to take an assistant coach job.
BCB, I agree that Huggins/Everhart is a non-story. We know that Huggins and Goins are in contact and, if nothing else, Coach told AD to give Everhart a call about the vacant position and Goins took it from there.
Now, as far as a head coach taking an assistant position to better himself, I’ve given you a couple of examples. Matt Painter left a decent Southern Illinois team to take over at Purdue when Gene Keady retires.
Bobby Lutz left DII Pfeiffer to take over at Gardner-Webb (Atlantic Sun conference), which was making the transition to DI at the time. Before Lutz had even coached a game at G-W (50 miles west of Charlotte), Jeff Mullins hired him as an assistant for the Niners. When Mullins retired, Melvin Watkins kept Lutz on his staff and, later, after the former left for Texas A&M, Lutz was promoted to head coach of Charlotte.
[BTW, Gardner-Webb’s most famous alum is probably Artis Gilmore, who played there as JUCO before finishing his college career at Jacksonville U., where he led the Dolphins to the 1972 NCAA final against UCLA. Plus another 17 years in the ABA and NBA.]
I doubt Everhart will be able to visit the Big Dance on any sort of regular basis at Northeastern, especially after NU makes the move from the American East to the Colonial. Now, being coach of Cincy in the Big East is a totally different story.
Just my 2 cents…

I have given examples as well. Painter for all practical purposes is the head coach. Keadys a lame duck. I’m sure Painter would not have taken that position had keady gotten a 5 year extension.

I never heard of G-W are they D1 now? I can see a D2, NAIA coach taking an asst job. As you say lutz never coached a game… If he did coach and was a success, would he return to an asstistant position? or wait for a bigger program to offer him a job?

I think a program like Uc has to look at the public relation s side when hiring a new head coach. Unless UC starts making final four runs, they will look to hire someone with a bigger name. I mean they made the big O the acting head coach.
BCB, Lutz was very successful at Pfeiffer before taking the job at Gardner-Webb, which is a member of the Atlantic Sun conference.
The author of an ultra-successful career as head coach and athletics director at Pfeiffer College (now University) in rural Misenheimer, N.C., Lutz produced a 181-91 record from 1986-95, including six straight NAIA Tournament berths, three “Final Four” appearances, one “Final Eight” and one “Sweet 16”. From 1990-95, his teams had an amazing .785 winning percentage (153-42). He developed 10 NAIA All-Americans and sent six players on to professional playing careers in Europe and the NBA, including all-time leading scorer Tony Smith (’92) and former L.A. Laker Antonio Harvey (’93). The Falcons had played in one NAIA Tournament prior to Lutz’s reign. When he finished, Pfeiffer was one of the nation’s Top 10 programs of the 1990s.

I’m not sure what you mean about Cincy hiring a “name” coach when Huggins finally retires, implodes, gets fired, etc. I think they have shown that they really don’t care about PR when it comes to the men’s basketball program.
I can’t seem to get you to understand my point about coaching. Moving from naia to a DI asst. is a step up. Moving from and up and coming mid/low major coach To an asst. coach is a horizontal move at best.

LOL . You got me with that one. I guess i’ll crawl away with my tail between my legs.
But someday I shall return
Northeastern’s Ron Everhart has decided to stay put.
Well, today is looks like Huggs is going to tab the top assistant at Northeastern to be the TA at Cincy.
