Apparently one of the last - if not the last - vehicle(s) to make it through stretch of I-40 at the NC-Tennessee border damaged by Helene. Cincy couple who were headed to CLT for today’s game at BofA.
I hope we offer our assistance to app, western, UNCA and any other programs impacted by this. We are in a unique position of having really good facilities and ample space for people to live and function.
I remember reading about the programs that helped Tulane and UNO after Katrina. Hope we can help someone that way.
I actually had a quasi-roommate for a semester from Tulane for this reason. He was taking classes at Charlotte while Tulane was closed. He’s originally from Charlotte is why he came all the way back up here.
If it works out logistically, IMO, we should do this.
Read that up to 100,000 people will be without running water for WEEKS.
Old school, low tech solutions FTW.
This 60 Minutes Overtime piece about dubious insurance payouts for Hurricane Ian in 2022 is a must read for all affected by Helene:
I live in Rutherford County. It is bad. For those that remember Hugo, add in massive flood damage to buildings and roads. We still have long lines at gas stations, several grocery stores are now open, most of the county without power. My neighborhood is without power with several downed power lines and poles. We have no estimated on when power can be restored. Relief supplies are being flown in by volunteer groups. I’m sure everyone has seen the devastation in Chimney Rock and Lake Luke by now. All of western NC in bad shape. They are still doing some rescues via helicopter. Some people lost everything, I mean everything. I have a large tree on my house and roof damage. I feel somewhat lucky. My family is safe, my house can be repaired. My brother was able to buy me a generator in Durham on Saturday morning. I encourage everyone to find and support a relief effort.
