I’ve got a question (Charlotte Observer)

Perfect example of how the observer has been going downhill since Mcclatchy. Article on the front page of the sports section is titled “UNC to face Charlotte 49ers in home football opener.” I thought, ok, this might be an interesting read on the matchup next year. Nope, the only mention of the niners is saying they are on the tarheels easies part of the schedule. It’s just a news and observer article from Raleigh about the tarheels schedule and they changed the title when printing it in the observer

Edit: I get it, the news and observer is a Raleigh newspaper and they should cover chapel hills schedule. And Mcclatchy wants to cut expenses so they share articles in areas they think they will be of interest. But why change the title of the article to indicate it’s about something it’s not. Just leave the title to indicate it’s about the tarheel schedule.

Just think it is really funny that the O basically told us to F off, we don’t need you to come back after many years asking how can they get us back. Karma is a bitch!

Langston really cares about the Niners being covered! Already stopped engaging.

He got tired of the bitching after coming here with sincere attempt. Unfortunately his sincere attempt was futile in the face of the reality that unless our fans give them the clicks they want, forget getting coverage. It’s clear that’s not happening so he bailed. Let the bitching continue. Yay!

clt asks if it was really him

I think it was a troll. They knew the response it was going to get.

I have been an Observer subscriber for many years, first the paper option and now the online option. But I don’t know how many times a month I wonder why I continue to subscribe because it seems there are very few items in the paper that I have not already heard about from other sources at least a day earlier. And the lack of 49er coverage has always irritated me. I am also a conservative, so I don’t even stop at the Opinion pages. I guess it’s just a habit for this old timer to spend 10 minutes with a paper each morning. Can I break the habit? Only time will tell.

I believe it was Langston, not a troll. And I repeat what I said a few posts ago.

I’ll say it wouldn’t need to be supportive coverage, but it needs to be neutral. It needs to be true journalism, with no slant.

Let something go wrong and Scott Fowler will be all over it

I was the same way from the 80s, until about 10 years ago. It was just part of my routine, even on vacation, if I was still in NC or SC I would find a CO paper box. I finally just quit, cold turkey. Haven’t missed it at all.

I quit reading the CO when the coverage of our program declined. Really enjoyed reading the Observer daily back in the day. I’m confident of the CO were to invest in our program, many would return.

I really enjoyed reading Doug Smith articles, and I used to buy the O just for his stuff

Hey @LangstonW this is what a hometown paper looks like covering its team:

Also, the Observer having an article about the gamecocks potential NCAA seed and not the fact that we are in lunardi’s latest bracketology and #1 in the conference is both insulting as well as emblematic of all the problems chronicled in this thread.

They also have an NBA and NFL team and a “big time” college program an hour and a half away and somehow find a way to provide good coverage of the local college team. Just like everyone in the thread said you would find from other papers in other cities.

It doesn’t matter. The ONLY thing that matters are CLICK$.

Well, went to read and click on the article covering our win yesterday and not one damn mention of it. Not surprised. Still and always pissed. It’s like after this post started and developed into what it did, the o’s good ol’ boys decided to stick it to us again with a total ignoring of this milestone win.

This is so typical of the O.

Tell 49er fans they don’t get enough clicks on their stories, don’t create any stories that allow them to get clicks.

I probably just wasted five minutes of my life that I will never get back, but below is the email I just sent to the Sports Editor with Langston cc’d:

============================================================================
Ms. Craver -

As a longtime Charlotte Forty Niner fan and alumnus (c/o ‘02) who currently lives in Charlotte, I consider this my home. I love Charlotte and while we have our issues, I rave about the city and my school any chance I get. What I find disappointing (but not surprising) is the lack of coverage of the local D1 College Sports programs at Charlotte and today I see more of the same.

The Charlotte 49ers Men’s Basketball team went on the road yesterday and beat Tulane in a game where they never trailed and were picked as underdogs. That win was our seventh in a row and we remain in first place in the conference at the halfway point of the season. I visited your site this morning to see what coverage existed and there is nothing there. No article, no recap, nothing. Yet again, the ‘local’ newspaper fails to cover the actual local college team while piping in Duke, Carolina & ACC coverage from your sister paper in Raleigh. This led me to cancel my subscription years ago and is why I will not consider coming back unless something changes.

Our school has a larger enrollment than UNC Chapel Hill (30k+ students today) with a massive alumni base (over 100K in the area) and is a growing research university that Chancellor Gabor and her team is working hard to put on the map, yet we get overlooked in every way possible by your organization. It’s not a new issue, so I am not surprised, but as a passionate resident of this city, I want to see the ‘local’ paper covering actually local topics that matter.

Respectfully,
Stephen Collie
-Charlotte resident & proud Charlotte 49er Alumnus

Too many other sources of news out there. I promise the Observer needs us more than we need them. Our university will be standing long after they are gone. Would I like for them to cover us like every other newspaper covers the home team and university in their city… yes. Will they receive another dime from me… NO. It would be like paying someone to spit on me. That is not an exaggeration as that is exactly what they do.
