No I think talking is good. I’m sharing you guys thoughts with the brain trust and am sharing my belief that covering you guys can be a win-win

We have had more conservative voices in our opinion pages, and just hired a full time conservative opinion writer (not sure of start date). Don’t break the habit of reading. I get the lack of coverage of Charlotte. trying to change that.

Nah, it’s really me. How can i prove it to you?

I get how people feel that way: you only cover us when bad things happen. truth is bad news sells. Why many local news stations start with crime/police in their first block every night.

The paper has a lot to offer IMO, but I get if the thing you’re really looking for isn’t there, you might not want to keep up. We’ve had some turnover in our sports department leadership and if the stories about Charlotte were to show an upward tick in clicks, more stories would follow. I know that’s not a popular remark on this board, but I don’t get to make coverage decisions, just telling you what will get more coverage

THe Gamecocks article came from our sister paper the Columbia State. South Carolina coverage is very very popular there among the potential readership.

Um…OK?

Hi Stephen I saw your email this morning. Thanks for reaching out to Lydia. I believe you are the first to reach out to her about 49er coverage shortfalls

Sorry to hear that FSL_Owner. Nothing we can ever do?

Tony Stark voice: “Steve, language.”

Because the almost over cover the local, USC, program.
We are #1 on a 7 game winning streak and not a peep from the observer today.
Sad and inexcusable

I have no doubt you are a quality person Langston. Just not a fan of the company you work for and the product produced. But I don’t live any where near Charlotte so I am likely not the target demographic. If coverage were to pick up to the level of the other teams in the American, I would still be interested. Considering the coverage today (none), I think we have a LONG way to go. I appreciate the interaction and dialog. Thanks.

Over a period of many, many years, has not the Charlotte Observer conditioned the reading public to not go to their website (or paper) for Charlotte 49ers news to click on (to read)?

I am glad she replied so quickly and appreciate you coming here to engage. I won’t repeat all of my points here, but the team deserves coverage and has a special story that many would be interested to read. Glad we will have coverage for the ECU game next weekend but sure would be nice to see a feature mid-week about the fairytale story in the works on campus….interim coach held together roster after coach quits, squad lost two top players to NIL and yet are playing better with the emergence of Milicic as a complete player and Jackson as a legit big man, defense that held a team average 90 points to 30 in the first half ON THE ROAD and is currently sitting in 1st place when picked 13th in the pre-season. Hell, the story writes itself!

Maybe the only one to reach out very recently…but I know the O was bombarded about the topic back in the day, to no avail.

South Carolina has always done heavy audience in Columbia. Our issue is for a long time here, that’s not been the case. We have a new sports editor now and if she sees an uptick, she would probably act. There will be more stories and those metrics will be evaluated.

Yes, we do have a ways to go, but let’s start here and see where it goes.

Over a period of years, the level of interest in Charlotte stories declined and fewer and fewer were written due to that. I have always believed, and especially in recent years, that we could gain audience and y’all could gain coverage by doing more, but the metrics have to show an uptick for stories we are doing. There will be more and those metrics will be studied. Best thing, swarm those.
