FWIW, I’m pretty sure this is in the plan, as someone discussed here previously. It just cannot happen soon enough.

Seriously, I think it’s a done deal, just the timetable isn’t certain yet.

Should see some activity this spring. Unable to find the link however.

If the new sign must have “unc” on it, can we put it in tiny letters and put the words “UNIVERSITY” and “CHARLOTTE” in larger letters?

Better yet, just put “NINER NATION” on the sign.

Ya, this spring semester should be the last ever semester with “the sign”.

A whole new entrance is being started this summer.

Enjoy.

brilliant, with a “welcome to” in front of it.:scared:

How about “The team that is unheard of in its’ hometown newspaper”

An entire new front entrance is going to be built along with traffic flow improvements throughout the campus. This is what Dubois said on the radio.

This “new entrance” isnt the entrance from Tryon near the two new buildings is it?

no, apparently it is going to split the “front field” in half

That’s good. Those fields are hideous anyways.

Although I like how beautiful Robinson Hall is the first thing you see with the current main entrance…

Where the heck it this sign??

its near the parking deck across from the soccer field.

That sign is pretty, but won’t do as a main entrance sign.

How can a green grass field be hideous?

How can a green grass field be hideous?
When was it green? Last time I played soccer there it was brown, with small patches of a pale-green toned substance, with several unexpected and random dips looking for your ankles to roll over in.

i used to work for the architectural firm that was awarded the new entrance design…
ADW architects will be designing it. www.adwarchitects.com. The contract was solidified last fall - not sure what the schedule is for completion, might have to wait for other construction projects on campus to finish first.

Their website is a bit jumpy, I think it is still under construction.

Those fields sure are nice in the spring, though.

I was in on a meeting to talk about the new entrance yesterday. Construction will start this summer, after exams and stuff, and the traffic flow will be VERY disrupted.

Here are some major points I gathered from the meeting with university administration, student leaders, and the designers of the entrance:

  • The Entire Front “Beach” will be ENTIRELY redone
  • The current entrance will be gone
  • The current sign will be gone (some people in the university administration want to auction off rights to smash it with a sledge to alumni)
  • The new entrance sign is gorgeous and will read “UNC Charlotte” as opposed to “The University of North Carolina at Charlotte”
  • As you enter the university at the new entrance way (which will be located about midway through the beach" there will be a pull of area with information about the school, maps, and about 2-4 parking spots
  • There will be two playable fields, one full size soccer field, and one field that has multiple uses (the beach currently has only 2 reservable fields anyways)
  • There will be small areas in-between trees and stuff large enough to kick a soccer ball around or throw around the football
  • The tennis courts will be gone
  • There will be a new stop light at the new entrance way, the old stoplight at the old entrance way will remain in order to slow traffic flow for pedestrians (and anger drivers)…
  • There will be a roundabout
  • The new entrance, if you drive straight in, will lead towards the norm statue in front of Reese, after you pass through the roundabout
  • There will be two phases of the entrance construction, the first phase will take place this summer which involves major traffic flow disruption, the second phase which includes much ornamentation and landscaping and stuff will be ongoing over the next year after the first phase is complete
  • The university has recieved a $1 million dollar gift to assist with the cost of the project
  • The more money alumni donate to the project, the faster it can be completed
  • The large old trees will remain

If anyone has questions I can try to answer them…
