Indoor Batting Facility

Rhody just opened up their indoor batting facility. I know we have one in the master plan for the Hayes, but I am not sure on the timeline. The sooner the better.

That facility looks like it would serve the players well, and probably for not all that much money either. Those pre-fab steel buildings aren’t terribly expensive to build.

Yep, Coastal Carolina just built a new one that is pretty badass for $1.2 mill. Includes a full turf infield and batting cages that can be raised and lowered from the roof.

Hitting and Practice Facility Ready to Open

Ground was broken in the spring of 2010, the foundation started to be laid July and as April approaches, the new Coastal Carolina baseball/softball hitting and practice facility is ready to open.

The $1.2 million facility, built beyond the centerfield wall of Watson Stadium, will have space for a full, artificial turf practice infield (17,424 square feet) with as many as 12 hitting cages featuring a mechanical netting system that can be raised and lowered accordingly from the ceiling. The covered facility will allow both teams to practice in case of inclement weather, or just an alternate area to give the teams more area for individual instruction.

This is the first of several planned upgrades to both the baseball and softball programs over the next several years, putting those facilities among the best in the nation upon completion.

“This hitting facility is going to among the very best in the entire nation,” said head baseball coach Gary Gilmore. “The flexibility to have multiple things going on at once and the versatility of the building will allow us to get a lot accomplished on rare bad weather days. Once we get this done, it will be a huge recruiting coup for us.”

I can see where an indoor batting facility would come in very handy in Rhode Island.

what are you talking about? It’s not like its cold or something? :stuck_out_tongue:

I doubt we’ll be building a steel fab building of any type on our campus anytime soon. Too much work has/is being done to keep institutional continuity.

Indoor facilities are pretty much a necessity even around here. I know most of the schools in NC have facilities similar to this. unc-ch, NC State, ECU, and UNCG all have fairly new indoor facilities.

Wake Forest had an indoor batting cage in the mid 90’s when I went there for hitting camp. It wasn’t as nice as the one Rhody just finished but it got the job done when it rained.

clt says to let the baseball team take bp in the library. no one should be in there anyway.

After watching us get only 5 or 6 hits in 19 innings (9 inning game and 10 inning game), a batting facility cannot be built soon enough.

Iron Mike, the team’s batting practice pitching machine, has been broken and out of service for two weeks…

Not really indoor, but we’re getting batting cages finally:

It’s a start.

I’m guessing they could always build around the cages, etc to turn it into an indoor facility.

Didn’t they have batting cages behind the visitor side, down by the creek / in the woods? I figured these were being built just to make them more convenient.

They can eventually turn this into an indoor facility and add seating on top of it.

Is this just a “guess” on your part or is it really the plan?

Part of the long term plan. I am not sure when it will happen, but they have that in mind long term.

There will also be some minor adjustments in the visitors bullpen area and the area down the LF line. The old picnic area that is being taken up by the new cages is supposed to be relocated down the LF line. I don’t know the time line on that either.

More on upgrades to the Hayes

said Charlotte head coach Loren Hibbs, who begins 2013 as his 21[sup]st[/sup] with the program. "The overall goal is to get our facility to the point where we can host an NCAA Regional.
