I asked the guys at JucoJunction.com to compare Coley and Mack, offer strengths, weaknesses, and roles they will likely play at Charlotte. Discussion from Premium forum:
Coley is a hybrid. He is a 4/3 - freak athlete. Mack shoots it better from the perimeter I think. They should be a solid tandem for the niners. Bret Swanson, JucoJunction Editor

Coley is a BIG TIME athlete. Mack is a good athlete, but he is more skilled thatn Coley. Mack can play some 3, while I feel that Coley is a 4. Both will make IMMEDIATE impacts for the 49’ers. Hats off to Charlotte asst. coach, Rob Moxley. He has proven to be one of the top recruiters of juco talent in the United States. Jucoguru
On why Eric Whitehurst didn’t end up coming here:
The main reason that it didn’t happen is they realized that he is not near as good as either Coley or Mack. jucoguru

I thought most people on here had Coley at the 3 and Mack at the 4. Seems like they both are the only players we have that can play the 4 well; but, I’m sure we’ll have them both starting. I wonder how our rotation with Wilderness/Dewhurst/Coley/Mack will work. Will we always see either Coley and/or Mack in the game, and if just one of them is… that guy will play the 4 with Dewhurst/Wilderness coming off the bench to play the 3?

They are interchangeable, both will probably play both the 3 and 4. Both around the same height/weight, but I still expect Mack to start the 4 and Coley to start the 3.

Charlotte didn’t know it would have it’s last 2 scholarships until long after they let Whitehurst out of his LOI, so I don’t think this is right.

Maybe Booker and Carlos told the coaching staff they were going to transfer during the season?
either way it sounds like both of these guys are better than whitehurst. although i loved some of the quotes from whitehurst after he committed. these guys sound like they will fit better into our new run and gun system better than whitehurst.

Maybe not the two vacated by Williams and Booker but we still had two or three to give at the time Whitehurst was let go. Obviously looking for guys who could replace EJ and DA and had questions about Whitehurst.
You think Lutz told Carlos to transfer or do you mean the other way around in that your previous theory was the right one?
If you get paid $400K to $600K a year and it is based mainly on winning and losing and you had dead weight what would you do? There are also many different ways to get this point across. Unfortunately this is the state of D1 sports eventhough many will not admit to it.
You think Lutz told Carlos to transfer or do you mean the other way around in that your previous theory was the right one?
Bobby’s comments at LL about how Leemire would run the point the first half of next season basically sent the message to Carlos, that he either transfers or he rides the pine.
Carlos was getting schooled by Gerrity in practice so he knows he didn’t stand a chance against playiing over Gerrity.
I do believe that Lutz, and other coaches for that matter, sit players down and give them a breakdown on how they view their role for the following season. If a coach wants to kind of usher someone out the door, they simply have to paint a dark picture for that player’s role for the upcoming season. This probably includes talk of decreased minutes and responsibility, plus giving the impression of a lack of confidence in their abilities. This way the player will ask for a transfer, and the coach does not have to directly tell them to leave.
I thought you could only, according to NCAA rules, remove a player from a scholarship if their grades dropped (or they became permanently handicapped, I guess)?
I don’t know how the guys play, but it seems like we will certainly need Coley’s height, jumping, blocking and rebounding skills at the 4. Maybe even the 5, there will definitely be times when Jones & Gaby are in foul trouble, it sounds like Coley would be our best 3rd option at the 5 (unless we land Jay-Z).
I like the idea of letting Dewhurst and Wilderness split the majority of minutes at the 3, but I haven’t seen Wilderness play either, maybe he is a more natural 4? Either way, we actually have OPTIONS for the first time in a while.

He could have just made Carlos’ life miserable… Don’t have to boot them, just make life so hard that his ego deflates and he meets reality.

I’m also leaning towards Coley at the 4. He blocks shots and rebounds better than Mack, yet Mack can score inside and out as well as lockdown an athletic 2 or 3. We can be extremely athletic with Gerrity, Lee, Dewhurst/Wilderness, Mack and Coley/Ngoundjo. And even Big Phil can get out and and run.
Interesting to look back. These guys have definitely lived up to expectations. Jrs and Freshman/sophs.
