Even if we lost 5 more games weād match our regular season loss total from our best performance in the A-10 and that was against a decidedly worse A-10.
I suspect we lose 2-3 more games realistically. It might be a little premature, because a meltdown is always possible, but I was just wondering where you would rank this team vs every other A-10 team weāve fielded.
Toss up between this one and the 05 team. With that said I paid less attention to niner basketball for a few years because I was pissed we were in the A10 to begin with. In all reality if it hadnāt been for football I am not sure I would be paying much attention at all beyond a game here and there. It really crushed me that we dropped the ball on where we were from the early 90s to the early 00s. At this point I prefer to just act like this A10 thing ever happened.
05-06 was better I think. Selfish as hell but I think it was better.
Our record this year is deceptive as it was built on the weakest out of conference schedule I can remember. This team plays as har as any Iāve seen, but is also limited offensively as I can remember in my 20 years. Iād like to see what next years team would do in the A10
Itās a tough call. Iād probably put the '05-ā06 team above this one by a bit. They had a ton of talent on that team and could play at a higher level, but were much more inconsistent in their play. I thought that one was Lutzā worst coaching job, that shouldāve been a tournament team, but even without being one they were pretty good. They were also hurt by the fact that the conference was so terrible that year, so the few inconsistent games they had ended up being killer losses.
This team is second best in my view. The Goldwire senior year team got hot at the right time for an NIT run, but otherwise were a weaker team.
It really bums me out that we might be leaving this conference right when we appear to be building the program back into a contender. Seems the team is still a year away, barring a big-time run to end the year. Or maybe we never get there depending on how people feel about Major.
Another interesting question is how fans feel about the future now, as compared to the beginning of the season. Losing Braswell and Mayfield, I think most fans wouldāve assumed next year would be worse. But with the way guys are improving year-to-year, I think next yearās team will be even better (though if it was legal, Iād love to have one or both of those guys back next year). Nickerson and Williams look like completely different players from last year, Henry is getting better too, and the freshmen have exciting potential.
Next year could be special if the players put the work in during the off season.
If Henry/Benny learns to handle the ball, Ingram grows more confident, the inside men learn to shoot FTs and Thorne controls his body, our team could be set up for a fun season next year.

thats a bunch of ifs⦠just sayin.
im excited about next year but am concerned about our offense. we need a legit scorer who can put the ball in the basket when we have to have one. either out of the current players or a new guy.

At least the pieces are here, hopefully this team stays hungry in the offseason.
Its going to be interesting to see how good Major is at player development.
I donāt think the pieces are all here. We need two shooters, Benny might be one of them if he can play enough D to get the minutes⦠I know Lester is coming, but he is a scorer more than a shooter. We need to be able to stretch the D more to open up the kids down low. All that said, the building blocks are here for some really good teams.
By the numbers this team is the best with our offense averaging 3.4 points more than our defense give up. 05-06 was next closest at 2.6.
As far as who had the toughest schedule currently our opponents average RPI is at 137.6 for this season and 05-06 was at 142.3.
As far as scoring goes, since joining the Atlantic 10 under Lutz we averaged 70.2ppg. Since Major has been here it has crept up each year from 66.6 to 67.0 to 68.1 this season. This is an indication that the offense is growing. Defense under Lutz since joining the A10 averaged 69.4 ppg allowed. Since Major took over it went from 71.0 to 68.9 to 64.7 this season. These are all signs that the program is going in the right direction.
Didnāt Bobbyās final team finish 5th in regular season? Itās looking like we may not finish that high this year. Like you mentioned our 1st season in the A10 was good too. Did we finish 2nd? We lost a good portion of our OOC games and then won most of our conference games. Iām sure the conference loved us bringing down everyoneās rpi that year.
