Ishmael Smith - 2006

April 05 - Said he’s hearing from Charlotte, Wake, Clemson.

Ishmael Smith, NC based TEAM HEAT.

Just working on something with Ish from his coach…

Soulds like his coach is in Lutz’s corner, which can’t hurt.

Check NinerReport.com later this evening.

niice

haha… Central’s coach is the only mens b-ball coach on the planet that is shorter than Lutz. I hated that guy when I was in HS. Good coach, though.

If coach is in Lutz’s corner but Lutz is not in our corner. Where do you really stand.

I think the 'quoted' reason was playing time....he was a pretty good role player I thought....

it was funny to say his name too. That taking the shirt off dunk was awesome.

Smith made the All-Observer first team released on 4/12/05. The comment on him said he’s being recruited by ACC and SEC schools. I checked his Rivals profile and there isn’t a single SEC schools listed for him. In his most recent interview on Rivals.com, he said he’s hearing from Charlotte, Clemson, and Wake.

And according to Coach Brewer the colleges that have attended games to watch Smith include: Charlotte, Xavier, UNC-Wilmington, N.C. State, Clemson, Wake Forest, St. Bonaventure, Miami-FL, and Appalachian State.

He’s announced his top two as Xavier and Clemson on the Rivals site. Said he doesn’t want to be too close to home. I’m guessing we felt this and took the commit from the juco point a few weeks ago.

Take some advice, Ish. Just say no to Clemson. No NCAA or NIT trips in your 4 years can get kind of boring :o

???..Damn. Xavier/Cincy, what the deal with them and North/South Carolina recruits. Time to go after Goode hard.

I can understand X going after Smith following the Churchill Odia debacle (which is very similar to the Martin Iti debacle for the Niners!)

BTW, Sean Miller certainly isn’t afraid to take on the “Big Boys” when recruiting:

K.C.: Hey Ish, come play in the asshole of the ACC with me!

Ish: Great! Sounds like fun! Forget winning, playing for a joke of a program that never gets anywhere wont matter to me as long as I’m in the ACC!

JJ’s update on Smith…we aren’t out but not in the lead as stated yesterday.

Smith said his top three schools are South Carolina, Clemson, and Wake Forest, but there is one school that he likes more than the others.
“Out of all three of them, I’d probably have to say Wake,” Smith replied when asked if he had a favorite. “Because of the year they’ve had and the way they play. They love to get up and down the floor and I love to push it.”

Saw Ish at NBAPA Camp and he’s pretty good. REALLY little guy, but I thought he was solid considering that he went head up against OJ Mayo and Tywon Lawson.

I too got the ACC lean drift when talking.

Smith commited to Wake today. Sorry if you’ve listed it elsewhere.

I hope Carlos Williams is as good as all of his teammates keep saying he is...

06/07 pgs: Carlos Williams, Jerrell Lewis, Leemire Goldwire, and possibly Marcus Bennett

I wonder if this committment had anything to do wioth Conley committing with Ogden to Ohio State.

Cant wait to see Lee Goldwire shut down Ish when Wake comes back to play the return game in 07/08! B)

This does not worry me in the least. We need to recruit at other positions.

"Coach Gary Williams met him and had him on campus, but it was a time period that he couldn't watch him play," Brewer said. "He'd seen him on tape, but he really wanted to see him play.

“I really believe he was going to offer because his assistant, Rob Moxley, really loved him and was pushing Gary to offer him. I think they would have a little later, but they were about two weeks late. And really I think Wake realized that also.”

Brewer said that Coach Bobby Lutz of UNC Charlotte offered Smith a scholarship when Smith was in the 10th grade. Lutz’s children attend Central Cabarrus.

“He loved Charlotte, and he loved Coach Lutz,” Brewer said. “His final two were Wake and Charlotte.”

Deacs get Smith, fast point guard
By Dan Collins, Winston-Salem Journal
July 2, 2005

Coach Skip Prosser of Wake Forest has said many times that the older he gets, the faster he wants his teams to play.

Prosser, who will turn 55 in November, isn’t getting any younger, and apparently his team isn’t getting any slower.

Seeking to keep the Deacons’ tempo revved after Chris Paul’s departure to the NBA, Prosser has landed point guard Ishmael Smith of Central Cabarrus High School in Concord. Smith, a rising senior who committed to Wake Forest on Thursday, is a 6-0, 153-pound point guard who, according to his high-school coach, is as quick as they come.

“He is as quick as anybody in America with the basketball,” said Coach Scott Brewer of Central Cabarrus.

Smith averaged 25.4 points last season, but Brewer said that that statistic might be deceiving. A more accurate indication of Smith’s approach to basketball might be his average of 7.3 assists.

“He really looks to pass first,” Brewer said. “He is a true point guard. He always wants me to say something about his assists as opposed to his scoring. He is an assists guy. He penetrates and dishes and creates shots for other people. That’s his game.”

Smith, according to Brewer, also received scholarship offers from Clemson, UNC Charlotte, South Carolina and Xavier. Brewer said he felt that it was only a matter of time before Maryland offered.

“Coach Gary Williams met him and had him on campus, but it was a time period that he couldn’t watch him play,” Brewer said. "He’d seen him on tape, but he really wanted to see him play.

The attraction, Brewer said, was Smith’s speed and quickness.

“He is quick on quick,” Brewer said. "Chris Paul’s high-school team didn’t push it that way. Now Chris could play 100 miles an hour, but his team didn’t play 100 miles an hour. Our team plays 100 miles an hour. We really push the ball. So Coach Prosser said that in all his years of coaching, he has never seen a kid coming out of high school push the ball the way Ishmael does.

"He’s quicker with the ball than he is without the ball, if that’s believable. I remember watching a couple of Coach Prosser’s practices last fall and how Chris and those guys would get a rebound and in four to five dribbles on a college-sized floor, they were to the other end making a shot.

“On a high school-sized floor, which is really 10 feet shorter, in three dribbles, Ish gets it off the glass.”

Smith doesn’t have the national reputation among recruiting analysts of point guards Mike Conley of Indianapolis (who committed to Ohio State this week), D.J. Augustine of New Orleans or Javaris Crittenton of Atlanta. Brewer attributes that to the fact that Smith has attended few summer camps or showcases.

But Smith was impressive in last week’s State Games of North Carolina, where he dished out 71 assists while committing just 14 turnovers.

“Everybody that saw him play fell in love with him, and everybody who talked to the kid fell in love with him,” Brewer said. "I’ve got senior English teachers right now fighting over who’s going to get him in class.

“He’s just that kind of kid.”
