Ishmael Smith - 2006

According to Bob Gibbons, he will be one of the top players in the state next year.

He is averaging 24.3 points, 7.8 assists, and 5 steals per game. The colleges that have attended games to watch Smith include: Charlotte, Xavier, UNC-Wilmington, N.C. State, Clemson, Wake Forest, St. Bonaventure, Miami-FL, and Appalachian State. He currently does not have any offers.

I’ve seen him play a couple of times - he’s definitely a baller. Central coach Scott Brewer has cranked out a few D-1 players over the last 4-5 years.

Smith is a Junior PG (same year as Goode at Prov Day) so if he came here, it would be in Goldwire’s Junior year…which would work out pretty well for him and us.

Does anyone have a feel for who’s a better prospect…Goode or Smith?

I believe Goode probably is. I’m going to try and go see him play in a week or so.

Apparently we are very high on Ishmael Smith. Sounds like Lutz and co. want him dearly from what I understand and have heard. This will be interesting to watch in the next year or so.

I’ll take either of them (goode/smith)… both sound like solid pg prospects to take the reins after goldwire. I expect they’ll have some large shoes to fill.

Caught the big North Meck game tonight. Good and bad news. I came away really impressed with Smith. He is very good. He appears to be that true PG we have wanted. He has great court vision and appears to be a great passer, something our PGs have been lacking. He may be listed at 5’11" but I believe he may play a little bigger. Or his lack of height doesn’t really hinder his game. It would be hard for me to imagine that Goode is better. Maybe Smith had a better than normal game. I believe he would be a great land for us.

The bad was that the Central Cabarrus students were chanting that he is going to Wake. I don’t know if Wake has offered but hearing the students would lead me to believe that that’s what he has told his classmates his plans are.

Time to get the Lutz’s girls on the recruiting trail at their own school.

Take it from me, Central Cabarrus students are a foolish lot. Don’t read too much into what they were chanting. Who won the game?

Thanks for the report. Sounds very talented! He ended up with 32 points in that game. On rivals.com, Charlotte is listed as High interest while Wake is at Medium…for what it’s worth.

North Meck won by about 15. But you take Smith off of that team, they probably would would have lost by 40.

I found it Normmm:

NORTH MECKLENBURG 79, CENTRAL CABARRUS 60

Central 11 16 19 14 – 60
North Meck 13 20 21 25 – 79

CENTRAL 79 – Ish Smith 32, McLane 8, Killian 8, Anderson 5, Gappens 2, Cuthbertson 2, Niparavicious 3.

N. MECK 60 – Michael Laney 22, Jamie Skeen 19, CJ Young 15, Stywall 8, New 6, McAuley 3, Baxter 3, Jenest 2, Jimoh 1. Records: NM 23-1, 14-0 ME-CA 8 4A; CC 18-6, 9-5.

but we would probably get on probation or soemthing.

Yep, something like that.

CCHS has a Nipravicious. Remember UNCC’s NIp? Why did he leave early?

Matas transferred to Weber State, but left before/during (can't remember which) his senior season. He's playing for a Lithuanian pro team now. Not sure if he's related to the player at CC.

My friend’s family is the host for the HS Nip. I’m pretty sure he’s Lithuanian, but they don’t follow Charlotte. I’ll ask but I’m sure I’ll be met with blank stares if ask about Mattas.

Mattas could leap! Didn’t he win the Midnight Madness dunk comp.

According to Scout.com, WAKE is already recruiting the top 3 PGs in Smith's class (2006). Smith is highly regarded but Wake clearly has their eyes set on the other three. Conley, the #1 guy just visited Wake and sounds like he may commit.

Scout.com 2006 PGs

Matas won it with a dunk where he took his jersey completely off in the process of the dunk.

That’s good to see about Wake. Hopefully they’ll land one of them soon and not pursue Smith anymore. For what it’s worth, Skeen now has Wake and Florida high on his list. I would think sometimes these guys would try to go together if they can. I would bet Skeen and Smith play on the same AAU team.

Any news on the western front?
