Jason Calliste 2009

Couldn’t find anything in the recruiting forum on this guy, and we’re listed as medium interest with Marshall. Listed as a 3 star on Scout.

Anyone know anything about this kid? I’m not an insider so if someone is, what’s the deal? There was a new story posted on him October 2nd, but I can’t see it.

He was mentioned in this thread but never got his own:

I knew the name sounded familiar. Well, if we’re high on him, he might as well get his own thread.

rivials has him listed as a 4 star in the top 150, and we are not listed on there…http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=71196&Sport=2

ESPN has this to say:
Evaluation

July, 2008: Calliste has good range on his jumper, consistently converting from 3-point range. He also has the quickness that allows him to get to the rim off the bounce. Calliste becomes an even better offensive threat if he exercises better shot selection and not settle so much for 3's in addition to cutting down on his tendency to over-dribble and get himself into trouble.

Rivals discusses the eighteen remaining players in their Top 150 that are rated 4-star and above. Calliste is ranked #86 overall:
86. Jason Calliste – The Canadian guard will sign late. VCU, Tulane, South Carolina, Charlotte, Marshall, Chattanooga, Marquette, Fresno State and Providence are in the hunt.

I’m a Toronto native and know Calliste quite well actually from my high school basketball playing days. He was a star at Pope John Paul II in Scarborough before he transferred down to North Carolina. I talked to him before about Mason and Coach L had in fact called his home several times and was really interested in bagging him (Who wouldn’t want a 4-star recruit?). Calliste is one of those guys who wants to go BCS and is pretty star-struck with the major conferences which is why he never wanted to go to Mason in the first place. Freddie Riley (another 4-star recruit) was also listed with heavy interest in VCU after Eblen signed and that just turned out to be false info as he had dropped us from his list after Eblen signed. This could very well be the case with Calliste. That said Calliste is a pure scorer with a great 3-point touch and would be an major impact player at the CAA-level. Thelast time I talked to him Charlotte was the school that was after him hardest.

nice find survivor

That’s not the first reference to Riley I’ve seen on NNN, as he is a teammate of Chris Braswell’s at Hargrave. Anyway, we’ll see both in the A-10 as Riley will be donning a UMass uni.

from what i have read about this kid, it sounds like he can play either guard spot which might be why we are recruiting him so hard.

I was wondering about that. If he is a legit 4 star player he should be motivated to play the point in college to give himself a chance at the next level (since he’s listed at 6’2"). On paper we seem like a great fit, he’d get a year to go up against Harris in practice and be the backup PG. The next three years would be his to run the show. Sounds like he is just waiting on a BCS offer, but we’re going to have a lot of talented players for him to play with for 4 years and it’s going to be hard to find a better combination of playing time and legit NCAA tournament hopes than we have to offer.

I was on usa today and ran across this kid. He is a top 150 player and is from my hometown of Winston-Salem. Crazy thing is he attends a high school Winston-Salem Quality Education Academy and growing up in Winston my whole life I do not know where this school is and didnt know it existed. I saw we were a medium intrest on his Rivals Profile and we had offered. Anyone know anything about this guy?

I’ve never heard of that school either. Maybe Atkins High School?

It could be Winston Salem Prep. But i remember seeing Reggie Johnson and Marcus Wright being listed under WS Prep. I hope it is Prep so I can watch him play West Forsyth over the break. But judging from WS Preps record doenst look like it would be them. I also think his AAU team is based outta Canada if I remember reading that right.

Be wary- very wary. Sounds like a clearinghouse problem waiting to happen.

According to what I’ve been able to find, it’s a charter school on Lansing Drive in W-S that opened in 1997 and has an enrollment of just over 200 students.

Yes, seems like this guy has Canada connections
