Jay Thomas

Actor Jay Thomas just passed away. For us old Niner fans, Thomas is best remembered for being the radio sidekick to John Kilgo for the 1975-1976 season. Thomas had limited knowledge of basketball but he was very entertaining. He even came to campus for a pep rally before our first appearance in the NIT.

I believe that Jay called the games with Michelle Tafoya, the NFL reporter. Michelle was Mickey Conley back then. Looking back that was quite the all-star booth. RIP Jay.

Guess which one took the job seriously. (Hint, the name did not start with “J” or “B”)

From her NBC Sports bio:

. Prior to her roles in Minnesota, she worked for WAQS-AM in Charlotte (1993), where she was the first female analyst to call UNC-Charlotte men’s basketball games.

It says 1993, so I guess that was not with Jay. I have fuzzy recall.

Sad to hear that. Remember listening to Thomas when he was a DJ at WAYS 610 - then a top 40 music station.

When I was in junior high school during the early 1970s, he led a basketball team that would play a school’s teachers in a “friendly” game for the students’ amusement. If the 3 point line had existed then he would have racked up even more points than he did!

Definitely recall his teaming up with John Kilgo to provide “color” for the Niners! Also enjoyed watching him on shows like “Cheers” and “Mork & Mindy” with Robin Williams.

Never caught his annual Christmas appearance on the “Late Show” with David Letterman so will have to Google that.

Jon Thomas Terrell aka Jsy Thomas, may you rest in peace!

Jay also played QB for the club football at CPCC while he was in Charlotte.
He was a fairly good athlete.

Yep I was at that pep rally and some students tossed him in the pond in celebration. He took it all in good spirit. Sad day.

clt says this is sad.
