October, 2008: Richardson is a role player supreme. He does all the dirty work especially on the defensive end of the floor where he displays a great understanding of coverages. He helps on screens as well as any high school player that I have seen this summer or fall. He also is a good weak side shot blocker and uses his body well to move the opposing post player out of the lane. On offense Richardson plays just as hard. He runs the floor every time and post ball side when he does not receive the over the top pass. Richardson is more skilled than he gets credit for. He is a good high post and low post passer. He can face up on the block and knock down the 12-15 jumpers with time and space. Power drops steps and a right handed jump hook over his left shoulder is also in the package. He will not wow you with quick athletic bounces but will beat you with his desire, power and physical approach to the game.July, 2008: Richardson showed a high basketball IQ that was impressive (2008 Reebok All-American Camp). First of all Richardson is a strong and athletic, but what was so impressive was his ability to help or hard edge on high ball screens and his ability to meet guard coming off the screen was better most college programs. He is an excellent passer out of the post, sprints the floor with regularity, can rebound on the defensive end and start the fast break and has excellent timing when blocking shots. This kid does all the little things to help his team that will not be recorded in the score book.

Richardson, a seldom-used 6-foot-7, 235-pounder, said he wants to be closer to his hometown of Houston while pursuing more playing time.
“I just wanted to go somewhere better for me,” he said. “I definitely loved my time here. I loved it here as a player and a student. I learned a lot here, and I’m going to miss everybody.”
The high-energy Richardson was popular in the locker room and best known for leading the pregame dance at Petersen Events Center while encircled by his bobbing teammates.
He said Friday that he's not sure what school — or level — he will pursue, other than to say, "I'm not going to go (Division) II." He could enroll in a Division I school and sit out a year or opt for a junior college.
“It’s up in the air,” he said. “I’m going to go somewhere closer to home and closer to Texas.”
not sure how he could go JUCO, already used up 2 years of eligibility…
While we are geographically closer to Texas than Pittsburgh, we are still far enough away that he would have more than 1 day of driving/have to fly home. We don’t know what other programs he’s looking at, right? But I would have to assume that if being close to home is important to him, we probably aren’t his best fit.
However, his abilities and work ethic sound like he would be a great fit for our system. Undersized at 6’7" but it sounds like he plays bigger than his height.
My biggest concern is that we would still need a post player for NEXT year, and he would not satisfy that need.
I just don’t get why he’d come here if he’s hard pressed to get back close to TX.
maybe he noticed that it wasn’t the best fit and is checking out his options. Something had to attract him here.
I don’t have Insider, but from what I heard it’s either us or Houston. 50/50 chance.
49ers leading for Pitt transfer? 12:36PM ET Charlotte 49ers

According to a tweet by Alex Kline, former Pitt forward J.J. Richardson visited Charlotte on Tuesday.
But will Richardson end up playing for the 49ers? One factor that doesn’t seem to be helping Charlotte’s chances is location.
One of the reasons Richardson decided to transfer from Pitt was to be able to play closer to his hometown of Houston, Texas, and Charlotte is nominally closer than Pittsburgh.
In addition, playing time might not be any easier to come by with the 49ers than it was with the Panthers (5.3 minutes per game as a sophomore). The 49ers are projected to have two senior forwards on their roster – Chris Braswell and K.J. Sherrill – by the time Richardson is able to join the roster in 2012-13.
Id support him regardless, but not sure I’d be wowed by this signing. Unless he worked extra hard, he’d likely be a role player for us as well. Pitt was a good team, but he logged a ton of DNP’s.
Visiting Houston this weekend. Evidently has visited Tulsa in addition to Charlotte
Going to be a Houston Cougar.
