Jonathan Frye - 6-4 Wing

Jonathan Frye of Northern Guilford has been released from his LOI at Appalachian State. He is still open to ASU, but is now looking at Charlotte, Butler and UNC Wilimington. As a junior, Frye averaged 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals, leading his team to the state championship. This season he averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. He was the Mid-State 3-A Player of the Year, a First-team All District, East-West All Star game selection, NC-SC All-Star game selection and a McDonald’s All-American nominee.

Frye could be a good fit under newly hired Charlotte head coach Alan Major, a former Ohio State assistant who replaced Bobby Lutz whose defensive style would suit Frye's fundamental game. The most intriguing candidate is Butler, whose stock rose incredibly following its run to the national championship this spring.

i would be more excited if if were anthony thomas. no offense to the kid.

I was just about to type the exact same thing. I really liked Thomas’ video back when we were looking at him.

the more i think about it, i am okay with this kid if a.)he is our new and better ian, b.) he is as good a shooter as advertised, c.) major doesnt make a habit of recruiting these types of players and d.) he can give us some depth. i understand there isnt much left for 2010 so we cant be too picky. this kid is a shooter but i dont know if he can play at this level.

Isn’t McDonald’s All-American nominee kind of prestigious?

Just saw a video of him on Scout.com, and he seems to have a little bit of a slow release on his shot and didn’t seem overly athletic (but it was just one video I guess).

Loads of players get nominated for it. It’s still good to get but not the same as being named to the McD’s all-american team

Here are some NC McDonald’s All-American nominees. Some good names on the list.

And some links for Jonathan Frye:

ESPN
Scout and here

Pretty sure close to 2,000 kids get nominated for the McDonalds AA game. Here, it’s put it in perspective this way… Jerrell Lewis and Ian Andersen were both nominated for the McD AA game.

That is good perspective. :o :frowning:

If Butler is interested in him, I am interested in him.

I wonder if us fans will have to get used to a different kind of player with our new coach. Not necessarily unathletic, but maybe already having good skills and fundamentals will be more valued than before, and being a good three-point shooter and highly athletic less valued (but not ignored). It’ll be interesting to see how Major decides to approach it. Butler interest does pique my curiosity, as they have a consistent track record with a defensive style and smart play.

At this point I’d take him. Heck, he’s 6’4’’. If he can just hit a wide open jumper, he will be better than Ian and will fit a role on the team. He was actually graded by ESPN higher than Jarvis Davis, whatever that is worth.

sound kinda like Dew with the around game, but not one great area. This may be the type of guys we start seeing more of over the next couple of years.

Plays defense, and we have lack of quality depth for D at the wing. Doesn’t seem like a bad fit. At worst, he’s a defense specialist for subbing. At best, he becomes a full timer with a good shot and stingy defense.

Dewhurst with an explosive first step would be great.

to me he sounds more like ian. dewhurst was more of a slasher and great athlete. this kid sounds like you would set screens for him and let him shoot. i dont mind taking a flyer on this kid but for 2011 we needs to land some stars.

That sound exactly like Ian. He will only be better if he can create his own shot and play defense. No mention of either of those.

I don’t consider Ian shooting sub 29% from 3 being able to hit the open 3. In fact, I’d say that’s a pretty bad shooter for someone who really only brings shooting to the table while they are on the floor. If you are a one trick pony like that, you need to shoot north of 33%, closer to 40% would be good.

i hope that he is not the top 2010 prospect that is visiting this weekend. nothing against the kid but he is not a top prospect.
