Strengths:
A reclassified member of 2013, the strength of his game has always been his ability to get by players. He easily transitions from scorer to playmaker and can do both. He owns a presence at his position and the kind of head strong game you want out of a playmaker. Newkirk uses his quickness to can get into the lane sometimes at will. Newkirk is a good athlete as well. His ball handling and passing are solid and he can hit the open jumper off the catch or dribble with range to the arc. Newkirk is also a good defender that plays with great energy. Pressuring the ball and anticipating in the passing lanes are also strengths of Newkirk.
Weaknesses:
He will need to steady his perimeter game and become a better, more reliable player behind the 3-point arc. Want him to continue becoming a vocal guard. Adding strength must be at the top of the list for Newkirk as he continues to develop in for him to not get knocked off the ball on offensive and to be able to handle taller or more physical guards defensively.
Bottom Line:
The switch into a different class will make him a mid-level priority recruit. He has a ceiling that could take him to higher levels which will be predicated on the resume he builds with his high school team. Overall Newkirk is a solid all around point guard that has great upside.NotesTravel Team: D-One Sports...
Josh Newkirk, PG – Like his Raleigh (N.C.) Word of God teammates, Newkirk made a number of plays at the Challenge. Newkirk was at his best when he was able to get out in transition. He has impressive speed and he loves to push the tempo. While we didn’t see him look to take many long-range shots, he showed nice touch on his pull up floaters and finished well around the basket.
RT @WillGunter247: 2013 PG Josh Newkirk from Word of God (NC) is on an unofficial visit to North Carolina today to check out facilities and speak w/coaches.

2013, PG, 6-1, 170 pounds
He has the speed and quickness with the ball in his hands to blow past opponents. Throughout the course of a game he can be a playmaker or a scorer. He can make a difference on the floor with his penetration and ability to find his teammate or score. His jumper is steady, but he needs to add range as well as communicate more on the floor.
Josh Newkirk, PG- Newkirk long ago established himself as one of the top athletes at the point guard position in the class of 2013. The four-star was quiet on Wednesday but came to play on Thursday. He pushes the issue in transition, gets to the rim when he wants to and is able to finish through contact. Next, he needs to refine his overall game and develop a little bit softer touch but it's clear that he's a high major prospect.
RT @NDKendrick_RR: 2013 6-0 PG Josh Newkirk Word of God (NC) says N.C. St, Tenn. & Miami are recruiting him the hardest. He is high on N.C. St, Zona & OK St.
Leaving Pitt and said to be looking to land closer to home. Not sure if that puts us in the mix but since we’re not an ACC school, gotta think we might be under consideration.
