Slam Magazine write up on Kevin

Kevin Thomas | 6-8 | SF/PF | Grassroots Canada Elite/ Pickering High (Ajax, ON) Many underestimate Kevin at first glance due to his wiry frame but when the whistle is blown it works to his advantage. But he will definitely need to put on weight before he enters his college career. His long arms and decent leaping ability allow him to snatch rebounds out of the air before opposing players get a chance to leave their feet. He has also shown great footwork in the post and a multitude of moves. His perimeter game is evolving as well with his ability to stick the mid-range shot and occasionally step behind the arc. As he puts on weight and continues to improve his perimeter game, KT could turn into a deadly inside-outside presence.

Scout lists him as having an offer from Marquette. Looks like this guy has lots of potential…hope we are taking a look in his direction.

October, 2009: Thomas has a great body with plenty of strength, length, and athleticism at his disposal, in addition to being left handed. However, he rarely takes full advantage of physical his tools around the rim, instead drifting to the perimeter, and although he has solid ball skills would be much more effective playing the game inside-out. Defensively, he’s much more effective defending the interior than perimeter, is a good weak side shot blocker, and should be a good rebounder although he doesn’t put a big enough emphasis on it.

September, 2008: Thomas does a great job of scoring around the basket, using his good leaping ability to out-jump opponents. He also gets off the floor quickly which catches defenders off-guard when Thomas grabs an offensive rebound and quickly goes up for the finish before defenders have time to react. In the paint, Thomas finishes with either hand and despite having a thin frame, he converts buckets in traffic very well. Thomas primarily relies on his left hand to score in the paint and would excel as a face-up 4-man given his quickness and athleticism, especially if he continues to improve his perimeter shooting. Thomas does need to focus on getting stronger as he develops throughout his high school career. Thomas contests shots very well on the defensive end and runs the floor well.

December, 2007: Kevin Thomas is a physical specimen who needs to continue to work on his skill set. He is very strong and has the ability to score both inside and outside. He is a lefty with who needs to work on has skill level because at this point, he is a good athlete playing basketball. He has all of the tools to become a very good player, now he needs to work on his game. He really runs well and is an active rebounder at times, but needs to get more consistent in all of these areas of the game.

Notes

Travel Team: Team Takeover…

Sounds like a kid with the right athletic tools that needs some coaching.

I agree NA. From what ESPN lists for his weight, either he’s added some muscle (Rivals & Scout have it <200) or they’re fudging the numbers.

His name just popped up with us, so I’m hoping it’s because of our new staff.

Wonder if he’s a coach Oliver recruit?
His name just popped up with us, so I’m hoping it’s because of our new staff.
that was my first impression. marquette has already made an offer. so there must be something to him.

Visited Wake either this weekend or recently. Don’t think we are recruiting him anymore.

At this point Thomas holds scholarship offers from Wake Forest, Texas, Arkansas, Seton Hall, Oregon, Temple, Charlotte and VCU. North Carolina State, Connecticut, Miami and Seton Hall are also involved.

He is a SF, but I could see him fitting our offense/defense mold and play 4 for us. Give us a couple years and I think we’ll be the most athletic team in the league.

Lot of good teams after him for not being ranked in the top 150.
