Well the good - We won, shot pretty well, solid games from Evic and Clark.
And the bad - Dear god we run a shitty fast break. Rebounding was a problem. We gave some very solid looks beyond the arc, however some of the shots they got open were deep 3s so I am ok with some of the open looks they got. Missed layups again, sometimes it feels like we are playing for the contact not for the basket, so when the layup goes up and no call is made we looks stupid. We need to make the layup and take the calls as they come. Bras - wow, he has seriously started regressing. I have no idea what is going on there.
When you say âmissing lay ups,â I assume you mean missing shots within 3 feet of the basket in traffic, not the dreaded missed lay ups in fast break when no one is within 15 ft of you. Not meant to be sarcastic, but tabs into my point.
I think Clark played well because he kept fighting, because overall I felt like he struggled for the first 2/3rds of the game. He struggles with his back to the basket, taller defenders have been eating him up. When he does make a move with his back to the basket, a) he gets blocked or b) he misses because he tries to avoid being blocked. He began to figure out how to get the ball in a position to where he had the defender sealed off from the start (or cutting to the basket), giving an open lane so he can explode to the basket. As much as he struggled, he really made up for it in the last 1/3rd of the game. He had a pretty hook in the second half though!! If he can hit that consistently, players will respect it and I think itâll help his post-move development. He canât push guys around like he did in high school.
As for the other missed lay ups: No one stuck out, so feel free to correct me, but Braswell was the only one that seemed to struggle to finish. DeMario and Willie seemed fine from what I remember, but Braswell seems to be in a funk. Doesnât seem like a physical problem, but a âhead game.â Hopefully itâs just a slump that he can fight through, and if it takes a little longer, the team rallies around him and finds a way to get the W.
Side note: even though he couldnât finish, I loved the baseline drive by E Vic. Heard in warm ups he was draining almost every 3 he took. If heâs going to be one of our main 3 point options, getting to the hoop off the dribble will really elevate his game. Just hitting 3âs will cause defenders to play up on him all game. If he can blow by them (and he has the quickness), itâll be a match up nightmare.
Clark had nine points at half time. Was one of the reasons we pulled away late in the first half. He his last score (a free throw) was with over 12 minutes left in the game. Not sure where your getting he played his best in the last 1/3rd of the game.
