I had to go to the library Thursday and it was the first time I had to go up in the tower. First off, for such a beautiful building those two elevators are straight out of 1960, tiny as a shoe box, and move side to side as much as up and down.
Anyway, I noticed you had to have a turn key to access those floors and I love mysteries. When I ask the info desk girl she had no clue. Anyone here have some hard facts to share about the mystery floors?

They’re haunted. That’s why they keep them closed from the public. Go out one night and stand in front of the building and look up at the 4th and 9th floors. You will always see something moving from window to window. It’s pretty freaky.

Seems they would want two floors together, well, unless the ghosts don’t like each other.
When I was a student, I was going up in the tower and a library employee had to stop at the 4th floor. He turned his key, the light lit, and I stayed on for the ride (just to see what was there). When the door opened up, it looked like the back/stock room of a store…shelving laying all around…just looks like a huge storage space. But it could have changed by now…that was 3 or 4 years ago.
The elevators in the library tower will be replaced soon!

The Library’s ninth floor is used by the Special Collections librarians as a work area. It is not open to the public but the work done there enhances the public’s appreciation and use of the varied collections the Library owns.

The 4th floor is the haunted one. The library was apparently built on an old Indian cemetary which desecrated it. Little known fact: You can bury your cat on campus grounds, and it will come back to life. That’s why there are so many stray cats on campus and we can’t get rid of them.
The 9th floor is occupied by poor Bonnie Cone’s son. She bought that floor for him with all of her vast wealth before she died so that he could keep an eye on the university and make sure we do as he wishes. Sometimes if you’re studying late at night you can hear him on the floor above you, wheeling back in forth in drunken rage, cursing the progress that the CFI and supporters for university football has made.

Nice. I heard Howard Hughes stayed there for a while as a guest before he died.

This explains so much. Back in 2001 when I was a student, I had a project due after Thanksgiving break. Everyone else had already left campus and I figured I had procrastinated long enough. I took the elevator to the top (side-to-side motion) and proceeded to get my books. That’s when the lights started flickering and then finally went out. Mind you, I really don’t believe in ghosts but that’s scary as hell when you’re the only one there and the lights are out. Now I know Bonnie Cone’s son was trying to tell me something.
