Lindy's on A-10 and Top 25

I haven’t seen the preview mag yet, but did find this on their website. They expect Xavier to take the A-10, with St. Joe’s, Rhode Island, GW, and Saint Louis among the group giving chase. Once I have a chance to see the magazine, then I’ll post their rankings for the league.

Link: Xavier will continue to wreak havoc in the Atlantic 10

And their top 25 includes #18 Davidson and #19 Southern Illinois. They tab UCLA numero uno.

Davidson at #18?! Really? I mean, I know I am no where close to being a fan of the wildcats, and I am a little biased, but #18? They lost to a mediocre Maryland team in the tournament. I know they are going to be good, but I don’t know about #18 good…

That’s a punch in the gut. The highest we got a few years ago with the Basden led team was #17. They would have essentially replaced us in the region. I hope we beat them down in Halton (hope being the key word).

let’s also not forget they lost to what amounted to an unranked Duke team, what, 85-47?

anyone that loses 85-47 to anyone should not be in any preseason polls.

What is the punishment for anyone who loses by 28 to anyone who got beat by 38?

I glanced at a preseason pub at a local gas station. I think it was Street & Smiths, but I could be wrong. Niners were picked 11th in the A-10, and the overlook said something like, ‘North Carolina kids don’t grow up dreaming of playing against Atlantic 10 teams.’

lol as soon as I read ninerball’s comment, I knew ID would have to chime in. It’s a given anytime someone brings up anything negative about Duke.

ID, ninerball never said we should be ranked, so I really dont understand your comment. All he was trying to say is that they got absolutely smoked by a just above average Duke team, and showed no reason to be considered a top 25 team.

actually my smart ass comment had nothing to do with duke, and i have been pretty good over the last year.

I just thought it was funny that we were back tracking to a game early in to last season for rankings on this year, especially when their star was a freshman and hadn’t fully developed in the offense. Add to that, we got absolutely demolished by them. I am not trying to say what should have happened, but I am suprised someones head didn’t roll because of that game, maybe that was the game the Phil decided there would be no extension, if thats true I would like to give him a pat on the back.

Nope, that was Lindy’s. They made a big deal about the A-10 not providing Charlotte with any rivals. It’s funny how it was never a problem in C-USA, when we were traveling to Wisconsin, Chicago, and El Paso all the time.

I was always told not to buy Athlon since they allegedly rush their reviews to get their magazine out before everyone else but I bought that magazine by mistake too. It was a happy mistake and I enjoyed it - the roster errors did not seem too extreme, I liked Charlotte’s review better than in Lindy’s, and the articles were pretty entertaining. But I got the impression that it did not spend a lot of time on schools outside the BCS (except for Memphis).

Lindy’s seemed to do a good job but I didn’t get much of a chance to look at it yet. Their coverage of the A-10 seemed better but I didn’t like the 8 man rotation they predicted for us (6 GUARDS! We gotta send a mag to Davila. Imagine if they’re right and Lutz sends out 3-5 guards out on the floor on a regular basis next year. ugh.)

If you’re cheap, I’d probably recommend Lindy’s. but if you have another $7 burning a hole in your pocket - it’s actually not a bad idea to get both. Good stuff on our opponents.

Also -for anyone who cares, this is the breakdown of predicted at-large bids by conference:

Conference: Athlon/Lindy’s
ACC: 4/5
A10: 0/2
Big East: 8/7
Big Ten: 4/3
Big 12: 4/4
CAA: 1/1
MVC: 1/0
Pac 10: 6/6
SEC: 6/6

Total: 34/34

Is the Athlon out yet? As far back as I can remember, Athlon always has given the Niners TONS of love. Often much more than we deserved.

Which is probably more noticeable because it’s something we are not used to receiving. Isn’t Athlon based in Charlotte? Perhaps that’s the reason.

Street & Smith’s is based in Charlotte as part of the American City Business Journals chain, which also owns The Sporting News (based in St. Louis).

I’m convinced someone who works for Athlon is a Charlotte grad. They dont always pick us high in the standings, but they do hype us up in the writeups and make us sound like world-beaters… Kind of like I would do :shades:

Lindys grouped conferences into high majors and mid majors and minors. A10 is listed as one of the 10 or so high majors. Isn’t it about time our coach start telling us “people just don’t understand how good our conference is”?
A10 is listed as one of the 10 or so high majors.
The A10 has always been considered a high-major conference. The only exception has been the recent attempt of BCS conferences to claime BCS FOOTBALL schools are the only high major basketball schools. That never made sense to me. What does football have to do with basketball?

Just had a chance to do a very quick glance at a copy of Lindy’s in the BofA Plaza and they pick Charlotte 11th and NO Niner as All Conference. Hmmm…

My bad. Thanks Run.

No problemo. I will put together a consolidated thread of A-10 predictions as soon as I get a chance to look over more magazines, websites, etc.

Davidson shouldn’t be ranked. However I hope we can beat them so I am not going to worry about their ranking. We have enough issues of our own going into this season then to worry about where Davidson is ranked.
