We won ugly tonight. There were some really weird stats. First of all we scored 15 points in the first half. Thankfully they only scored 19. Longwood takes more threes than almost every team in Div I, averaging 11 made threes per game. Tonight we held them to 4-19. The Lancers only shot 5 FTs tonight, so we played smart defense. We shot 26.2% for the game, which is a recipe for losing big, but we pulled it out. With 12 seconds left we were up 2 and Longwood got the ball. They took a TO, but had none left, so they were called for a Technical. John Davis got one shot and hit it. I don’t understand why it was only one shot, but we squeaked it out.
The last thing that surprised me was that Cooper Robb fouled out, and was replaced by walkon John Kitoko rather than McGill. Kitoko got 7 minutes, and McGill got 2. That seemed like the coach was sending a message.
After we took the lead, as the guys were getting in rhythm on O, Sanchez motioned on our next possession to slow down on O. I personally don’t get his thinking. Taking a good open shot early in the clock is not bad. I actually think you save energy for D by doing so. Otherwise, you spend 20 seconds wasting energy dribbling and passing the ball and then the last 10 seconds trying to get open for a rushed shot.
Whatcha mean “slow down”. We were going so fast before that that we had about 4 shot clock violations. That’s like being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and seeing a “reduce speed ahead” sign.
Guys were playing faster, in rhythm and hitting shots around the 6-7 minute mark. Even the crowd got into it. This is the same we did against Chatt and OSU.
By no means am I saying that but he has to let them play. If not, we will have a lot of open schollies next year. We won’t have to worry about telling McGill to leave!
