Dean Smith fought for the creation of a separate African American Studies Department at UNC-CH where he shoved his African American American players into the AFAM program. The program had no graduate studies and was not audited by the academic regulators.
Coach Smith was a detailed oriented person who knew where all his players were 24 hours a day.
