Lutz and NC State

Sean Miller (Xavier, former NC State assistant), Sidney Lowe, Gregg Marshall (Winthrop)…

Also, Tubby Smith… He is being ran out of Kentucky (similar situation to NC State and Herb Sendek) and NC State is a possible destination. He has also made it clear if that he wants to coach in the NBA.

If Tubby goes to State look for Rick Barnes to go to Kentucky. Rumor is he wants that job bad.

I have heard that several boosters have said that Rick Barnes is still in play for the State job.

In the Winston Salem Journal it said that NC State and Texas A&M’s Billy Gillispie were in serious talks.

A few days ago WRAL reported that Mike Brey (Notre Dame) and NC State was a done deal. He then came out and said that he hasn’t talked to NC State and is not a candidate.

An obvious choice is Derrick Whittenburg, but NC State and Fordham both have said he is not a candidate. Sidney Lowe, his teamate on the 1983 championship team, would be a better candidate anyway (head coach in the NBA for the Minnesota T’Wolves and Memphis Grizzlies).

All this means is that NO ONE knows. Who knows what their AD is thinking. After the whole Calipari fiasco, with everything being linked to the media, he is being very tight lipped.

Lowe isn’t a bad choice. He’s with the Pistons now. Just as long as Lutz isn’t on their short list.

Tubby is goin to the Bobcats.

I heard Gary Williams from Maryland is close to getting it. Have they came out and said yet that they are going to hire a new coach this year? I think Bernie might coach one more year.

Heard Bickerstaff on the radio the other day. He was going to take some time to reflect on the season, then come to terms with what he wants to do. I think he’s more of a GM type guy than a HC.

I recalled from the past that Sydney Lowe wasn’t a candidate because he didn’t get a degree and thats supposedly a requirement. That may have changed but that was his downside last time or anytime they used to talk about firing Herb.

I also want to add Pack fans aren’t delusional. Herb was a stale underachiever who didn’t make people proud of their program.

He’s a good guy, but not State’s guy.

^ Lowe gets his degree in June.

I’m not a big Sendeck fan, but the guy deserves his due. He took a nothing team that was mired in losing and put them in the tournament for five straight years. State became one of eight teams in the nation to win a game in every NCAA tournament in the last three years.

I think Stansbury from MSU would be a good fit at State.

I think Tubby Smith could be good. And for those that talk about a fanbase that should be ashamed, Kentucky should of trying to run Tubby out of town. He’s won a National Championship there and went to 3 Elite 8’s. But it is Kentucky. I think it would be a good move for Tubby to leave UK and go to NC State (if he doesn’t get a NBA job).

Going from Kentucky to NC State in basketball would be the equivalent of going from Texas or USC to ECU in football.

Best of luck to the Pack.

Tuby Smith to State hahaha that will never happen. I Have a better chance to walk onto the basketball team than that.

Here’s an informative blog from David Glenn on the situation. Also points out some issues I’ve brought up before concerning admission requirements. It seems that Cal wanted to have some ā€œless academically suitedā€ recruits before he committed to NCSU.

…"State officials said that, during their discussions with Calipari, he asked many questions that fell into the domain of the school’s compliance director, admissions office and academic support staff. During his brief trip to Raleigh, he even asked to meet with some of those people. He later said that State’s academic requirements made the job less attractive to him.

One of the things that alarmed Calipari was the significant difference between UNC-system academic requirements and those of the NCAA. As a public university in North Carolina, N.C. State is part of the UNC system, which also includes UNC, East Carolina and a dozen other schools. Each of those universities must abide by the rules set forth by the UNC-system Board of Governors, which in recent years has raised minimum academic requirements to a point well above the NCAA minimums."…

I think I’ll leave this alone…other than to say that it appears that Calipari is admitting that the academic requirements are more challenging at schools in the UNC system.

He saw the 2 mil on the table, first class facilities and then reality. He couldn’t bring his type of guy to NC State.

Well seeing that he nearly took the Virginia job last year, I was just wondering how many minutes a game do you think you’ll get?

It’s definitely possible. Probably won’t happen because of his huge salary at Kentucky now that he would be stupid to walk away from unless he was going to the NBA. But to think that would ā€œneverā€ happen is a little bit ignorant. He is treated worst at Kentucky than Herb was at State.

UNC system requirements = JUCO for us to compete in a lot of cases.

you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to meet entrance requirements for the unc system, espcially for an athelete. this gets into a whole other issue though. sheeeeeesh.

That is one reason why there have been so many. It is easier for a transfer student to gain entry at UNCC than it is for an out of state freshman because of those requirements.

One of the main issues is out of state students. Their school system requires…say 3 maths and the UNC Univ system requires 4. Is a player really going to take 4 maths so he can come to UNC Charlotte when he is being offered by UGA or UTenn?
