Lutz on FNZ

Lutz was on MSP just now.

-mentioned Bowden and again how his surgery was less intensive than they thought it would be (no pins or plates)

-talking about scheduling, trying to extend Clemson/Maryland and the like, talking to UNC/Duke as always

-talked about Dewhurst playing the point. mentioned that he’s a good shooter, but reluctant to shoot, however he drives and passes well. says Coleman is good on the wing, don’t want to try to move him to PG but could help out down the road as he learns the system. says we might have several guys that could spot Harris but Harris is still the key and thinks we could still be a very good team

-talked about Gerrity. said he was shocked and never heard a complaint from him prior to his decision. says he told his family he doesn’t think he made the best decision. says if he knew he would have recruited a PG. ended with “thanks for bringing it back up” with a laugh

-said Xavier is the team to beat in the league with Temple/SJU/Us in the conversation and UMass and LaSalle as sleepers

If anyone wants to add details, feel free. This was done with the benefit of just one cup of coffee. I usually need 6-8 to reach fully operational status.

Personally, I think Dewberry’s always had a great handle on the ball, so it’s promising to see him at PG. He’s talented. But who knows. We’ll have to see what happens!

Thanks for the recap, NLP!

Thanks for posting NLP. I caught most of the interview. I had it streaming and the internet connection is a little less than reliable today here at work. I chuckled when Lutz made a crack at Kelvin Sampson.

Lutz was asked who the team to beat is this year in the A10. He said Xavier and spoke about how they grabbed recruits that could be starting for Indiana. He followed that by saying, I don’t know how good they are, but hear they are good and great to talk to on the phone…

Feels good to hear coach on the radio. It’s about that time again Niner Nation!

Dew hurst will of course run that highside motion that Bobby runs, but I’m also hoping that he will drive and dish off of it as well. He definitely likes to attack the basket (when his confidence is up).

I also hope his size will help him see over defenders to make better passes.

With Dewhurst and Harris at the point, we may be unsure about the offensive side of the ball, but man we look good on defense. Especially if we can work on the trap.

I actually think Dewhurst might be better driving into the lane just because of his size difference. He needs to learn not to try a jump-pass without someone open. There were several times where he would leave his feet and get stuck in a bad spot.

As for defense, with Dewhurst and Harris both being fast, the half-court and 3/4 court trap could really work well. Also, remember Coley is pretty good at trapping and not picking up ticky-tack fouls, so those three guys could create a lot of turnovers, especially against half court teams.

The trap should work, but I worry about him being able to handle a jet PG with a superior handle. He’s not the best when he’s backpeddling. Like most of our defenders, we’re better at anticipating and using explosive athleticism at the opportune time to pick off a passing lane or poke a ball out from a man we trapped or weren’t covering.
