It's a fine story, some of which you won't want to hear.

Is that it? I was convinced that a player was ruled ineligible or something.

He said that as last season was wrapping up when asked about the new guys. I believe it. A 3 year extension would guarantee it, IMO.
He was talking about this year’s team, not the program. Their are various opinions on whether/when to extend Lutz in the story, just like there are various opinions on here. If you think it should be done now, there are people in the story you will disagree with. If you think it should wait, there are people in the story you will disagree with. That’s all I was saying. No bombshells, though. I never said there were. Don’t be paranoid. If there was news like that, it would already be on charlotte.com, because that’s how we roll.
At least this shows we are on the same page. I think most of us don’t expect a tremendous winning record this year. I believe a majority here agree that we should see production made through this season and expect to see a strong team in the next year and a really strong core in two years.

:lmao:
Mike, I’m looking forward to reading the paper BEFORE my morning run as opposed to after. Thanks!
GO NINERS!!!

What about every other major event that’s happened to campus sports that has NOT made it to charlotte.com?

Expecting an injury/player ineligibility/etc. on the eve of the season opener is not paranoia if you’re a Niner fan.

If you make this thread about me, I’m ditching it. There is a whole thread to debate the Observer pinned here.

Mike, I have never given you any crap about the Observer…although I do agree that you should give the hometown team more coverage…but that being said, I HOPE HOPE HOPE this is not a controversial article written on the OPENING day of the season. I assume is has something to do with Bobby’s situation based on what you have said, but I think it would be very distasteful if there is some controversy in who thinks he should be here and who thinks he shouldn’t.
I will save my judgment until I read the article…since it’s OPENING DAY I expect an article about getting to know all the new players we have on our roster and what they think about the upcoming season. I would have interviewed Lee and asked him what are the differences with this team compared to last season and why he thinks we will be better.
I could understand an article in February about his situation if we have won a hand full of games, but now would not be the right time.
We’ll see what is says tomorrow.
Lutz’ status is the biggest story of the team this year. He knows it. You know it. Writing about something puffy is the job of a fan website, not a newspaper. We’re writing about the big issue. I don’t think the story is controversial so much as the topic is among fans. But judge for yourself. I think it presents both sides.

Yeah but do you have to run it on the day of the home opener?!?!? It’s disrespectful and distasteful. I agree with fotee. This is the same thing you did right around the conf tournament game.

The job of a newspaper is not to turn everything into an editorial, or for editors to go out of their way to piss off people.

And you know that before you read it. Excellent.
There’s a three-page thread about this, but no interest in the topic? How does that make sense? It’s a story, not a column.

I am very interested in reding the story. This is major news and will impact this program greatly this season and next. I would like to see some sort of Meet Your Charlotte 49ers though with a run down on our new players and key veterans.
Considering I started that thread and have wanted to for a while, I’m looking forward to it. I know I can be testy on here at times with you Mike, but I’m being honest: It’s a hot topic and I want to know more about it. Lutz has been a figure in this city for many years and who knows, maybe the story makes people pay a bit more attention to us and if we surprise some teams, get some more people going.
I am a firm believer that aside from a scandal, any coverage is good.

Mike, maybe I am not understanding what you are saying. But to me you are saying on one hand that this is the biggest story of the season, and on the other hand you are saying that there is nothing controversial about Bobby’s situation…it’s just controversial among the fans.
First off, again I have never lashed out at you about the Observer coverage, because I am just not that concerned about it. I am more concerned about how good we are going to be.
However, I HAVE to say something because writing an article about this on OPENING DAY is absolutely distasteful!!!
Bobby still has a contract for ANOTHER TWO YEARS. This is NOT the biggest issue this season. The biggest stories this year are: how will all the new players gel with each other, how this is the toughest schedule in school history, how ACC finally have scheduled us, how we have three local boys on our team, how this is the highest recruiting class in school history…shall I go on.
Bobby’s contract MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING right now because NOTHING is going to happen right now, or unless he gets an extension nothing will happen the whole season.
Again, I am trying to hold judgment until I read the article, but from what you have said so far, all due respect, you are WAY OFF ON THIS ONE!!!
There’s a three-page thread about this, but no interest in the topic? How does that make sense? It’s a story, not a column.
Mike, there is a three page thread because we are discussing when and if it should happen and nobody is saying that it is going to happen BEFORE OUR OPENING DAY GAME. I am sure your article does not suggest it will happen before opening day, but man it’s just not an issue right now. The team, school, and coaches are more focused on what the team will look like, NOT Bobby’s situation.
Also, a huge point is that the discussion on him didn’t start until TODAY. Look at all the other threads, it’s all about our schedule, recruiting class, style of play, team chemistry, etc. Hardly anything, until today, about when Lutz should or shouldn’t get an extension.
As an A-10 fan AND a working journalist, I think the subject of Lutz’s situation is inextricably linked to the beginning of this season, as well as the end. So I don’t think its untoward for the Observer to write about it now. The issue never goes away, and this story itself is not going to affect how the team plays one way or another. Give young people credit for their resilience – and ignorance!
I also applaud Mike Persinger for interacting with fans as he does. My company does this as a matter of course and has since its inception 10 years, back in the early wild days of online journalism. More reporters and editors should do this, within reason and time constraints, and I think Charlotte fans are fortunate to have a person at whom they can vent, even if the Observer does not cover the team as they wish. Mr. Persinger would not be here if he didn’t care at all about current or prospective readers. It makes good business sense, but it’s also good for the public.
