Are we after Malik Cooke? I heard he requested a transfer from Nevada back to around his home city of Charlotte. It was in the Asheville paper the other day because he played a Christ School. His request was denied but he is still trying. Is it us that wants him??? He’s a 10 ppg guy and would have 2 years of eligibility.

which means he could transfer this year, but would not be able to get a scholarship during his transfer year…which would work better for us…
First of all, the guy can’t and won’t pay his way for a year. His parents are financially strapped after his stepfather became ill and lost a large portion of his business (he said 90%). Cooke asked for the transfer based on this, but the Nevada AD are being pricks about it.
The only option Cooke is considering at this point if they continue to deny his transfer in good standing request, is to pull a Jeff Whitey and stay a semsester at Nevada, but participate in no basketball activities. He would still retain his scholarship, and could transfer out after a semester.

He is still able to qualify for an academic scholarship or any other non-athletic scholarship. If he has the grades or qualifications he can take advantage of it. If his parents are that bad off, he may be able to get a Pell Grant.

He can easily do a Phil Jones, ie. get financial aid. Phil had to pay his way 1st year.

From what I can infer using the dates of the article, it sounds like Cooke explained to his coach why he needed to transfer and the coach basically said, ‘Sure. I understand. Go take care of your family and I wish you the best.’
Then the AD denied his request to transfer. That’s a little odd. As long as they play hardball, Cooke will not effect the '09 basketball scholarship situation at Charlotte or any other D1 school.

If this is true, then it is totally reprehensible.
My first thought was that this thread was about Malik El-Tamer cookies.
Will play at South Carolina…
