I am a UNCC alum, but also a longtime St. John’s season ticket holder. I was hoping you guys might be able to help…
SJU just picked up a kid named Malik Stith from East Meck. He is prepping next year and then committed to SJU as an 09 recruit. Do you guys have an opinions on him? Anyone seen his game? Is he a Big East level recruit? Thanks in advance.
i know he was the charlotte observer player of the year this season. led his team to a state championship. of course the question i have to ask. if you are a CHARLOTTE alum, why are you a st. john’s season ticket holder? just asking. no hostility.

Grew up in New York. Live in Jersey. 3rd generation SJU fan. Both my parents (and numerous aunts/uncles) are SJU grads both undergrad and advanced degrees. My mom grew up 2 blocks from the university. My grandmother worked in the finance department for a very long time. Season tickets in our family since 1965.
Thanks for the input. He seems to have earned some decent accolades, but not even ranked by Rivals. Just trying to get a feel what kind of player he is. Our coach (very much on the hot seat) seems to be recruiting mid-major players instead of BE level guys. He has done a decent job finding a few unheralded guys before their recruiting blew up, and I was hoping the same here.
i think that is what you have here is an underrated guy who can definitly play at the big east level. if you go to charlotte.com there is an article in the archives about him involving his recruitment and the state championship game that should give you a better feel for what type of player sju is getting. on a related note, do you ever attend charlotte games or follow the niners?

Yes. I attended Charlotte for my junior and senior year. I was in Lambda Chi when we had front row seats. My favorite game was beating Cincy during Rivals week on ESPN2. I attended the Charlotte and Fordham game in NYC this year.

Thanks. Just interesting that he wasn’t even ranked by most of the top services. Most BE recruits are at the very least 3 star players, most early commits are 4 or 5 stars. SJU fans are just worried the coach is reaching again because no one in NYC respects will play for him.
What?? Boby just got an extension? A lot on here arent big fans of his, but Lutz definitely is not on the hot seat.
Sorry… I had to go there. A pet peeve of mine is people using we, our, my, us, etc. when talking about a school they never went to or ever will go to. But I’ll end that tangent now before it blows up.
All you need to know is that this kid went to East Meck. That alone tells you everything. He will average a quadruple double, win Big East and National Player of the Year honors, and lead you to the Final Four.
you also have to take into consideration that stith was a late signee and those guys are not usually your marquee players. if your a coach looking for a pg late in the recruiting season and this guy is available it seems like he would be worth taking a risk on.

I was talking about the SJU coach being on the hot seat. I use we, us, our for SJU eventhough I never went there, but I care more about the program than 99% of the alums. My family has a long history with the university, and even a former University President in the family. Been going to games as long as I can remember.
Do you have any feedback on Smith? SJU fans are really puzzled by this move. Do you think he can be a solid starting pg in the Big East? Strengths? Weakness? I appreciate any insight.

He is prepping, as such he is an 09 recruit. That would make him an early commit in this case.
This looks pretty old but I’ll throw in my 2 cents re: Malik Stith. I’m a Niners season ticket holder - but my daughter goes to East Meck and I’ve seen Malik play a number of times.
He is a great point guard. High basketball IQ - like a coach on the floor. Rarely makes mistakes and is a real leader. He’s very fast - maybe the fastest kid I’ve seen with the ball (including the Niners) and he’s fearless. He can get to the basket and finish above the rim. He’s also a shutdown man to man defender.
Weakness - an unreliable outside shot. He’s not the guy who will get the green light from the 3 point line. OK from 10 - 12 feet and a great rebounder but not a real threat from deep.
I’d love to have him on the Niners - so I think you’ll be happy with him if he’s got the right players around him. His team was the state champ in 4A ball as seniors. The forwards and center played off of his ability to drive and got a lot of layups or dunks when he broke down his defender and their man left to help. I can see the same thing happening in college.
Apparently rumors of his tranferring, but Zagaria has tweeted that Stith has no intention of doing so. While his numbers were very modest as a freshman (11 mpg, 1.6 ppg, 1.2 apg), he did play in all but one game for the Johnnies.
