Mark Price - Hornets Assistant - accepts Charlotte HC position

Does anyone else see that Mark Price = Sidney Lowe?

I went to wiki to check him out. They were both college PGs who went on to the NBA (same round and exact same pick btw) who had coaching experience as assistants for NBA squads. That comparison doesn’t thrill me.

When I suggested that it was in jest! AWESOME!

I would agree with this. But I do believe he understands basketball strategy at all levels (HS, college, and pros).

I like it

Mark Price had a much more respectable professional career.

Wonder what his style of play will be

FIFY

Price was a better player than Lowe and has coached at more levels than Lowe. I think he is more highly regarded in terms of skills development as well. Whether or not that translates into success as an actual coach though is completely unknown. So, while there are a number of things that suggest Price will be a better coach, it still is a fairly large risk you are right.

Left field. Big gamble. With those two things said, there’s certainly very underrated promise and potential here. His work with MKG since last year has been nothing short of a certified miracle. I remember speaking to a fellow Hornets season ticket holder/Niner fan friend about the fact that we were expecting him to be stolen away from the Hornets as an Associate Head Coach somewhere just off that work alone. So that speaks well. Still. Differences between that and leading an NCAA program are paramount. He certainly has a lot of names he can drop on the recruiting trail. We’ll see what happens. I’m surprised with us going left field here, considering where we’ve been. Reminds me of TB randomly getting Greg Schiano from Rutgers out of nowhere. I just hope we don’t end up with MRSA.

If you don’t pay a lot of attention to the NBA, this is a good article with some insight on Price. For those who aren’t Hornets fans, he turned MKGs jumpshot from terrifyingly unwatchable to respectable from 20 feet in. Miracle.

The money we put behind this needs to be bigger than just his salary. We need a strong commitment to what we pay our assistants with this hire. If we cheap out there, I feel it will set up Price for failure.

Iowa State grabbed Fred Hoiberg from the front office of the TImberwolves and it has sure worked out well for them.

I agree. It is a bit of a gamble on the experience thing. And - he still has to accept the job. Wonder if he’s a cheaper option than Moton?

One thing that is different between them is that Price has had coaching experience at each level of basketball (high school, college, and pro). Most important in that to me is that he had experience in the college game under a very good coach, Bobby Cremins. I think he has worked his way through the ranks for years before becoming a D1 college head coach.

Um yeah Left field. He is an unknown but certainly worth the gamble. This would certainly have me back in the seats for a couple years.

I can dig it. We all wanted an ACC pg turns out its Price not Hurley. I liked his game and think he is probably a really good teacher of the game. Have to surround him with assitants that know recruiting since he wont have a network at all besides his name, which won’t mean much to many 16-18 yr old kids. Also need to get him someone that has been a HC on the staff - even if for just the first few years so he can anchor the program. I think he is a little more vocal and loud than Major, but still reserved enough for Judy and Phil. Overall big risk here - could work out great or be a disaster. I am somewhat surpried Judy went this way.

I don’t think this is a out of the ball park hire, but I will go with a double with the runner in position to steal 3rd.

FNZ is ā€œspeculatingā€ 400 - 500k a year. I can’t see Judy paying that as well as the buy out on Major.
But we are a ā€œfootballā€ school now - that changes the currency…

I think it is very likely that insurance is covering most if not all of Major’s settlement.

Wow. Judy’s kitchen floor’s deeper with prospects than I thought.
