Mark Price - Hornets Assistant - accepts Charlotte HC position

RT @GoodmanESPN: Charlotte has offered job to Mark Price, source told ESPN. Price currently an asst in NBA with Hornets. Story coming.

Former Georgia Tech star and NBA point guard Mark Price has been offered the Charlotte job, sources close to the situation said.

Price, 51, is currently an assistant coach in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets. He was a standout at Georgia Tech from 1982 to '86, and played 12 years in the NBA, where he was a four-time All-Star.

Sources told ESPN that Price has been offered a five-year deal and is mulling whether to accept it.

Price would replace Alan Major, who parted ways with the school last week after five seasons in which he took a pair of medical leave of absences. Major was 67-70 personally and the school was 75-81 in his time at the school.

Just got an ESPN buzz about it… Interesting.

This would be fun

Dude has never stayed in one place for longer than 2 years as an assistant, so it is very difficult to get a read on how good he’d be as a coach. There’s no doubt that this guy was a solid player. Definitely a left field candidate.

If he can make people shoot like him, I love it. Actually, I love it either way.

This is interesting. I would hope his decision would come very soon, giving us time to move ahead with someone else if he doesn’t accept. Would he leave the Hornets immediately, if he accepts, because there is still recruiting and whatnot for the late signing period? Plus, he would need to get NCAA certified as soon as possible I would think.

I always liked Mark Price, because he was a tremendous shooter and floor leader. I would hope that translates well in his ability to coach and run a program. Plus, I hope he can coach defense. He’s smart enough to pick all that up though.

But, muh Capel and Hurrdurrley.

I’d be okay with this. I have no idea how well he can recruit, but I would expect shooting (especially FT shooting) to be improved.

I said Mark price would do wonders for our shooting. Granted the players that would benefit the most are leaving… If any of you watch the Hornets you know what he has done for MKG is nothing short of amazing.

I sure did not see this coming. My first thought is BINGO! I am old enough to remember watching him at Georgia Tech and he was a warrior. He is a classic over-achiever because he was not big, or fast, or exceptionally athletic, but the Cleveland Caveliers have his jersey hanging in the rafters. He has done the grunt work in his coaching career, and he has been a TV analyst so I think we can expect a good upgrade in our media presence. He has worked for a couple of NBA teams as a shooting coach. Other than not having the resume of a coach that has taken teams to the NCAA I really like this. This would excite me.

And he was a point guard. As we have heard about Byron Dinkins, that’s all that matters.

Stealth AD at its finest. Never saw this coming. Gotta wonder, does she go out and look for names that no one else is looking for on purpose?

Anyway, I think I like this idea.

Will be interesting to see who he brings in to be assistants.

I don’t know enough about his coaching to pass judgment. The only thing I would say is that it doesn’t match my list of things I would be requiring and/or looking for in a head coach.

I am curious how in the world his name got thrown in there though. We never seem to get anyone even close to who people are speculating.

Seeing who the assistants are going to be will be very interesting for sure

That’s a name jolt for sure…

VERY curious what the recruiting plan is and who the staff will be… Wonder if this is where Dinkins gets in simply for the recruiting connections

Mark Price was actually a better athlete than he’s probably given credit for. He was pretty darn quick with the ball in his hands, and not really that bad of a defender. Always loved his game. A great floor-general.

I approve of this hire (should it go through).

Let it slip at work - more than a few ACC fans in the group. Coupla questions about his coaching experience. But consensus was thumbs up, all around. Everyone said that he needs an experienced college guy on his staff and a couple of ace recruiters.

Wow… did not see coming. He’s definitely got a name that can help with recruiting, but I have no idea how his coaching will be. Xs and Os? Who knows? Very curious to see who he brings on his staff… should he accept.

If nothing else, he brings immediate name recognition and excitement to the program.
